Mostly very dull to read. Last 30% or so were interesting. But I didn't really connect with the characters at any point.
When I initially read the description about [b:Dead Silence|57693184|Dead Silence|S.A. Barnes|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1620942800l/57693184._SY75_.jpg|85069079], I thought it was an interesting concept about a disappearing ship that might be haunted with the ghosts of the dead passengers. However, the expectation of this book being a great horror novel fell flat on its face. It actually felt like a Scooby-Doo episode where the hauntings and ghosts where the result of a person/company not true paranormal activity.
I hate this trend lately where horror writers switch back and forth between "current" timelines and what happened in the past, aka the horror side of things we actually care about. It kills any suspense or tension that was building up because now we know who made it and who didn't. You might as well be watching Alien, but every time one of the crew goes off by themselves, have it cut to the conversation between Ripley and Burke from the start of the second movie.
There was stuff I liked in this, but I wish the whole story had been what was going on in the first half in real time and really leaning into it. There was some good atmosphere in this, but ultimately I'm not a fan of the reason for what caused it all, and my interest started to peter out once I hit the second part. Anyway, just don't come looking for something on the same level as Alien or The Shining because this ain't it, chief.

As others seem to agree, the romance felt unneeded and a bit gross.
A pretty good space horror story.
