Paula Hawkins is a literary genius! She struck lightening twice with her sophomore novel and I can't wait to read more of her work. She keeps you enthralled with twist after twist right up until the last sentence. Bravo, Paula. Bravo!

This is an atmospheric thriller, set in a small town in northern England. There’s a river which winds around the town, and there’s a pool that was once used to drown witches. In this novel, two people from the town have drowned recently, a teenage girl and a woman - and so the police are checking it out. The only trouble is that the chief of police is also a denizen of this small town, and he’s enmeshed in the lives of the suspects.

The novel is narrated by different characters, and mystery hangs around all of them. In the beginning, the characters mostly only reveal a small part of what they know, and this coyness can get a little tedious. Gradually, the reader knows more and more of the townspeople’s secrets, some of which are red herrings. I wasn’t particularly surprised at the ending, however, after all that build-up.

This book had amazing potential and was a great story but Hawkins used the perspective of way too many characters. There was no need for the reader to delve into the minds of EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER. Literally EVERY. SINGLE. ONE!

Toll!

Fazit: der Fluss nimmt sich, was ihm gebührt. Eine klare Leseempfehlung.

Definitely hard to keep track of all the characters. I was expecting something that I didn't want to put down, and this wasn't it.

I was going to give this 3 stars but the ending dropped it to a 2. So many of my friends loved this book and I just couldn't get into it. Too many unlikeable characters.

I enjoy her writing but I couldn't follow this story. the multitude of characters (had to keep going back in the beginning to remember who was who) made it difficult to follow the plot line. Still have some unanswered questions, like did Lena kill Mark? Or did he take off? Also why wasn't Jules still upset about her sister holding her under the water? Seems she immediately forgot that and it is never thought of again once she finds out her sister didn't know about the rape. Idk just was for me a tiring read, even though I think she writes well.

Latar cerita adalah desa kecil, jadi kemunculan tokoh cerita yg lumayan banyak dgn narasi masing2 terasa seperti mengenal warga seisi kampung, eh, desa.

TW: Suicide, Rape, and Abuse

“No one liked to think about the fact that the water in that river was infected with the blood and bile of persecuted women, unhappy women; they drank it every day.”

I have pretty mixed feelings on this book. At first I was enjoying it but as the book went on I kind of stopped caring as much. Starting with the characters, this book follows A LOT of perspectives, which at times I liked as it kept me on my toes but it was hard to follow at times as well. If you are going to read this book I would for sure recommend making yourself a character chart, as there is so many people that have complicated relationships with other people. My favorite POVs to follow were Lena and Jules, I also enjoyed hearing more about Nel's past. I don't know if it just me, but the way Nel was talked about, she literally acted like someone Lena's age but she was an adult so... I don't know maybe it was just me but I kept picturing Nel before she died as like a child.

The writing I was really enjoying at the beginning. It was dark and mystical and everything that I enjoy and expect in a thriller. The book is very slow paced which did not bother me at first but it took me a while to complete it. One of the big complaints of this novel is the realization, the bang, the big reveal, etc. No spoilers here but it was a bit disappointing... I don't like the direction it took and I thought it was really random. I was like "oh is that it???!!".

“Beware a calm surface—you never know what lies beneath.”

Again, I did like how this book talked about the river- I think that aspect was done very well. But between the pacing, some of the characters, and the ending, I was a bit let down. At the start of this book, I was tabbing a bunch of quotes and thought it could become a new favorite but it didn't quite turn out that way.

If you guys are looking for an atmospheric thriller you may enjoy it. If you are really experienced with thrillers I don't think this will offer anything new for you, in my personally opinion.
