I did not like this book. Too much character jumping.
This is Hawkins' second gripper, and I think that she did a better job with this one than with her first, _The Girl on the Train_. It's more layered, more complex, and the story keeps unraveling until the very last page. The characters are generally three-dimensional and interesting, and the plot did keep me guessing. Wow. This was even better than “Girl on the Train!” Great for suspense and mystery lovers!
Great read!
Lots of twists and turns. Complicated characters. Any one could be a murderer. There is plenty of guilt to go around.

This wasn’t as engaging as I wanted it to be. I was intrigued at the idea of women dying in this town as a result of patriarchy or whatever, and I feel like this book THINKS it’s a big statement on that but it isn’t. I had a really hard time keeping up with all of the characters and remembering details about them. All in all, kinda disappointing.
Jules and her sister Nel have been estranged for years. Nel has returned to their childhood home to raise her daughter and work on a project about the troubled waters in their hometown (both literal and figurative) which has not endeared herself to her neighbors. When Jules receives word that Nel has died, she returns to care for Nel's daughter and try to unravel what actually led to Nel's death. The longer she's back the more it becomes clear that there are many stories lying below the surface.

pretty solid thriller with a lot of layers that came together well
I liked Girl on a Train, but this was trying way too hard to reproduce the frantic POV changes and so on from that book. I read about 10 percent of it, and just gave up, exhausted from trying to follow it. Maybe I'll try it again at some later point.
Way too many characters/narrators to begin with. On top of that, the plot is not engaging at all, I had to force myself to finish this one. Big disappointment.
