Eloquent, grandiose deep-space descriptions and an exciting plot warred with some corny dialogue and a lack of emotional connection to any of the characters. I liked this book but I can confidently say I won't reread this because of the length and somewhat cheesy finale.
Only one thing actually kinda irked me, and that was the Seekers immediate disappearance after being introduced. Such a cool enemy, what do you mean it only gets a brief mention towards the end and we never get to see it in action? Why bother including it in the first place?

DID NOT FINISH: 55%

It is:
- much too long for the story;
- mostly lacking world-building;
- mostly lacking any perceptible character development;
- mostly lacking any cultural or social nuance or interest;
- fundamentally, just not well written.

The plot structure bones are okay.  It just doesn’t have nearly enough content-rich meat on the bones, and the loquacity kills all senses of pacing and tension.

Look, the Chosen One trope is still the Chosen One trope even if the protagonist is a woman. This was a long-winded sci-fi story about the peril of conflict, how much xenophobia sucks and how we should all just mind meld and make cool shit together.
The alien allies were referred to as “jellies” well until the conclusion of the book and the protagonist never found common ground with the Inari. It’s a completely different civilization! Write one conversation where they discover they have ONE THING just one thing in common!! Men writing aliens always ends in disaster because they refuse to connect with them if no sexual connection is possible.
In fact the only reason Kira didn’t just sound like a man altogether is because I listened to the Jennifer Hale audiobook rendition of this novel.
She gets a living armor carapace she cannot shed and she has absolutely zero concern or discomfort about it. Can you not describe how invasive it is? How creepy? How painful? How it moves weird? Obviously a dude would be like “power armor?! Sweet!!” He mentioned menstruation once but because she’s sterile it’s fine?! Dude, it does not work like that. Generally, frustrating listen for me.

I’d like to know at what point editors stopped removing pointless fluff in books. This could have been notably shorter without losing a single moment of plot.

So when I first heard about this book, it was the story that lured me in. I had read some of the Eragon series but the author wasn't the reason I wanted to read it. I then heard some negative feedback which made me hesitate momentarily about reading but boy am I glad I took the plunge. This was a fantastic, large scale science fiction story which I have not had the pleasure of reading for some time. The characters are well written, developed and relatable.
Kira, the main character was so great getting to know. She really ended up being a real bad ass super hero!
I felt like the Matrix soundtrack could be playing while she fought aliens! LOL
I really loved the crew of the Wallfish. When Kira met up with them and got them involved with her journey I really got a "Firefly" vibe off of the ragtag crew. The characters were funny and engaging. Their relationships were believable.
Without saying anything about how it ended, well it was mind blowing. I really felt that it left an opening for there to be more to the story but it could easily work as a stand alone story. I highly recommend this book.
