This book is both disgusting and intriguing. I liked the way it was written, including scientific reports.

Inside Out
By Lor Gislason

I want to first thank DarkLit Press for giving me the pleasure of listening to this novella on audiobook in exchange for an honest review!

After reading this, it's confirmed. I need more body horror in my life.

I really enjoyed this novella. It was full of goop in the best way possible. It had the perfect amount of gross things going on coupled with great storytelling. I would love a novel based in this world the author created. I need more!

This novella reminds me of one of my favorite books I read last year, Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy A Snyder. So if you enjoyed that book you'll love this one as well!

This would be an excellent first body horror experience for someone interested in the sub-genre! It's a quick read that you can tell a lot of thought and effort went into. This gets a full 5⭐️ rating from me. Check it out!!!

I found this one quite choppy and hard to submerge myself into - I do love the cover artwork though.

Each chapter is told from a different person's view of what's unfolding before them which gives an interesting take on things - some were horrified and others joyful. Plus I do love all things gore.

However, I never really got a clear sense about what was happening internally with the subsumed people, as each person gave a different account of the actions and feelings of the "mutated beings" - were they mindless creatures once goop or did they retain feelings and memories?

I guess it's left open for the readers to decide, but I wanted a bit more of an explanation and final ending.

*I received a complimentary copy of the e-book from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I went into Inside Out expecting lots of goopy body horror - it delivered by the bucketful! Inside Out is written like a series of vignettes, with each one building an overall world where things have become, well, very pink and squishy. This structure lets the book move quickly from one gross-out to the next, which fans of body horror will find very satisfying. Inside Out is more than its gore, though. Each chapter is from a different POV, showing off the author's talent for writing diverse characters with unique voices, motivations and relationships. This all makes for a quick, compelling read that is sure to please fans of movies like The Blob and Society. Highly recommended!

A short novella with 80s body horror vibes that will leave you wanting more. This was a fun and truly gross read. I highly recommend it!

It sure was goopy but ultimately wasn't what I was looking for. The book hops around a ton of different characters and different threads, so there's no way to get attached to anyone at any point, and there's not really a plot. This is a book you read to see some goopy slimes of human beings. I think it does what it intends to well, just that what it intends to do and what I was looking for when picking up this book didn't align well.

told in multiple interlocking short stories Inside Out paints a portrait of how humanity might react to a virus that causes the infected to mutate into monstruous forms. It comes across as bleakly plausible but I would have liked more from the body horror aspect of it (don't get me wrong there is quite a bit of body horror I just find Gislason could have leaned into it a little more to make it more effective). Overall it was still a very enjoyable read.

honestly two stars feels a little generous but I also can't bring myself to make it a one star review. while the main idea is interesting, the actual writing is very poor. each segment feels like it was written by a different person, none of whom had agreed on what the actual main timeline/events of this disease were beforehand, so everything felt disjointed and confused. some segments felt almost post-apocalyptic while in others kids were still attending public schools. there's not much of a commonality with the disease from segment-to-segment - sometimes it melts you into piles with other people and sometimes it makes you into a beautiful creature with an haute couture skin dress. I don't think a disease for something like this has to be extremely detailed or anything, but consistency would be nice, as well as more of an idea on how the world is handling the outbreak.

on top of those issues, there's a ton of typoes and bad grammar that is really distracting - it honestly felt like something I would have found on r/nosleep and dropped quickly due to bland writing, overused tropes and incoherent story beats. the gore and body horror simply is not enough to get past everything else, which is a shame. this could have been really cool! I think I got my hopes up too high from reviews only to feel like I was reading a bad creepypasta. I think I need to be a little pickier with indie works in the future.
