My friend (and author!) Dulcie thought I might like this Hamish Macbeth detective mystery because there is nothing gruesome in it. To that end, she was spot on.
On the other hand, I found it a silly story, filled with frivolous stereotypes resulting in nothing and no one (other than Hamish) garnering my interest or appreciation. It did make for an easy read in bed, so there is a point for that, but otherwise I will move on to books by authors who provide more fully fledged characters and more nuanced mysteries.

This was a fun, quick cozy mystery and I plan to continue on with the series. I hear they get better and better and since this is the author of Agatha Raisin I know I will keep enjoying them.
Fun little mystery. I will be working my way through this series soon.
Everything I wanted from a cosy mystery set in Scotland. I loved the setting and characters, even though I felt disengaged from them. Perhaps I needed a different introduction to Beaton's writing style. I did enjoy the mystery, and I enjoyed getting to know the area as was beautifully described in setting the scenes.
I didn't like the main protagonist, nor did I particularly enjoy the social dynamics. It felt like I was missing out on parts of the book because I was either too young or too foreign to understand the underlying social dynamics.

I read this book awhile ago so I'm not going into details, but I love M.C. Beaton for light, fun, amusing reads. Not all of the books in the Hamish MacBeth are of the same quality, but some of them are terrific and I've enjoyed the whole series. (I just with the author would get Hamish and Priscilla together once and for all!)

This is the first in the series and the first I have read. Hamish Macbeth is an interesting character, and I look forward to knowing him better. After a bit of a slow start the mystery took off. I enjoyed the clues, and how the various characters responded to them.
