Least favorite so far. The plot was a bit tricky, I wasn't as interested in the setting, and I found multiple errors that should have been caught by a copyeditor.
I also felt a bit cheated re: James; most of the time we're around him, Maisie is uncertain. I'm not sure what makes her say yes, and we don't get any of the comfortable, happy, married time.

I've decided to listen to this series rather than read although I find at times the narrator's pronunciation annoying.
This book was rather convoluted and all over the place.

So Maisie goes to India to "heal" but the author chooses to skip all that and instead picks up the story by plunging Maisie into new catastrophic events and despair. She eventually finds herself in Gibraltar meddling in top secret affairs surrounding the war in Spain. However, the book ends with what may be healing and a new brighter life?

It was well written but it took me awhile to get engaged where before I couldn't put one of her books down. I agree with other reviewers that the first chapter was a shocker and it was a let down. Not willing to abandon Maisie yet though!

Oh Maisie,
I leave you alone for one book and your life falls apart!
But I loved the way the updates came as letters and telegrams to set the stage for this next book. I don't think I could have handled reading about these events in story form. Too painful.
Maisie tries to reconstruct her life in this novel and has to, in effect, start over. She mentally revisits her relationships with her past mentors and the important lessons each has taught her.
All this takes place in Gibraltar and Spain, just as the bombing of Guernica occurs. Once more, I learn history via Maisie Dobbs.

This book felt slow; nothing much seemed to happen or not much progress was made.
