This was sweet, quiet, and introspective - full of meaning in its stillness. Not much happens plot-wise, but the atmosphere was exactly what I needed. While I would’ve enjoyed a bit more plot, the quiet nature of this story felt just right in the moment. The representation is beautiful, and the historical setting adds another lovely layer. We don’t get nearly enough trans stories set in the past, and this one felt like a gentle balm.
I really wanted to love The Companion but there was no conflict or stakes, and the characters saw very little growth from beginning to end, making for a lackluster reading experience.
There were some small moments I enjoyed, and it's always nice reading about trans characters getting their happily ever after, but I wish the author had given us more time with the characters working through the conflicts they had with each other.
This one is very spicey, if that interests you, but spicey scenes need to be earned with characters communicating or conflicting or something, and that just wasn't there.
Just wish this book had more. Could use a good 200 more pages.

Queer and trans cottagecore erotica, it was full of joy, adult conversations, and a lovely historical world where everyone gets a sweet ending. It is lovely to read about historical trans people finding their joy, and sadly all too rare in publishing.
