Queer and trans cottagecore erotica, it was full of joy, adult conversations, and a lovely historical world where everyone gets a sweet ending. It is lovely to read about historical trans people finding their joy, and sadly all too rare in publishing.

Fast paced story with plenty of love and steam within

This is a polyamorous t4t romance that is a surprising mix of sweet and spicy.

This was my second read of the Trans Rights Readathon 2024!

Madeline, a trans woman, moves away from the 1940s New York City literary scene and moves in with a trans man named Victor. She begins to write the stories she wants to tell instead of the ones she expects will sell as romance blossoms between Victor and another trans woman, Audrey.

I liked the idea this novella, but ultimately the story fell short for me. Madeline cooks, puts on clothes, visits Audrey, spends time with Victor, and writes. That's all she does for all 160 pages. The result is a story that feels repetitive. I see the author's vision with the characters and development of the relationship, but it didn't feel effective and I found myself bored. Even the sex felt repetitive until the final scene.

Still, this story felt hopeful in the sense of finding a place of safety and finding happiness in a casual existence with the people you care about. I'd love to read more from this author, because I think this one was just a miss for me.

I really wanted to like this bcs this could’ve been really sweet if put back into the editing oven for a little bit longer. It’s not bad, the romance and character development is just too hasty for me to feel invested. I’m by no means a slow burn connoisseur but especially the initial moving in & getting to know one another needed some more padding.
As people already stated, it’s not quite clear why the characters feel attracted to each other & I’d like to add that the point where
she initially gets physical with Victor while simultaneously starting a seemingly emotionally intense relationship with his ex would’ve needed some more communication. I’m just not buying that he has no emotional needs worth talking about, especially giving the living situation & both him and Audrey unwilling to talk about their history up to this point. And I’m not even talking about jealousy but just the logistics of it? Unless he’s the most chill and experienced relationship anarchist of his time lol.

I think novellas as a medium can be done so well, but this one struggles to get me to resonate with the characters.
