I got this book as a 'blind date' where all I saw was a brief description so its unlikely that I would have picked it otherwise. This book was actually somewhat brilliant because its a serial killer who you can't help but like. Sadly, it became somewhat repetitive with the killings and from chapter one I was just waiting until he met the cop. It was predictable in a lot of ways and generally too gruesome for me. Now I can't say anything about the ending because the kills became too much for me, it may have been the most surprising thing to happen in literary history, but overall this book was not for me.

Like many others, I got interested in Dexter by watching the Showtime TV series.

The books are a very different experience. In the show, Dexter comes off as much more noble - a nice guy, and a vigilante taking down people who escape justice.

The Dexter of the books is much darker. Sarcastic, full of himself and more than a little cruel. He's not a vigilante meting out justice, he's a murderer who promised his dad he'd only murder in certain ways. This creates a character that is more entertaining in many ways, but a lot less sympathetic.

Dexter is also an unreliable narrator, and sometimes taken by surprise when his uniformly low opinion of the people around him isn't born out.

This is not a book for anyone who is too squeamish, though the exact processes of how Dexter commits his crimes is left vague. However, the glee with which he contemplates it, and the casual disregard he feels for every living thing over the age of 18 or so can be pretty distasteful.

I'll be continuing the series, but only with some breaks to cleanse my palette.

I don’t like it when the TV series or movie version was better than the book, but sadly this was one of those rarity. The writer overdid everything. There was no way to like any of the side characters, they were either super dumb, incompetent, corrupt, useless, irritating, or all of those. And I can’t even like Dexter much, which I love in TV show, because he was such a boring tiresome serial killer. The writing was just tedious, repeated themes, long unnecessary explanation and description, dull overdid monologue, abrupt and plain conclusion. Seriously, the writer tried too hard.

Not like the tv series that I so adore. This book needs to show and not tell.
