The book offered me some answers for a couple of questions that I've had after having read Bernhard Schlink's "The reader" and it also depicts horrors during the Nazi regime that I haven't read about (from Genoa and Italy).
What I didn't like though: the language, the manner in which most women have been portrayed and the rigidity, the dryness of the novel.

Zuerst war ich mir nicht sicher, ob ich Fünf oder nur Vier Sterne dem Buch geben soll, aber nach einigen Wochen, entschied ich mich für fünf Sterne. Denn rückblickend war ich begeistert und zugleich dauernd schockiert von der Handlung. Die Handlung, die Zusammenhänge der einzelnen Figuren und die deutsch-geschichtlichen Information in diesem Buch sorgten dafür, dass ich als Leser dieses Buch einfach nicht mehr weglegen konnte und weiter empfohlen würde

Brief book and an easy read, I did find the “terrible truth at the heart of Germany” fairly predictable.
Krimi van hoog nivo. In een ruk uitgelezen. Terwijl ik toch nauwelijks detectives lees. Dat moet voldoende aanbeveling zijn. En ga je daar op in, dan kom je er achter waarom een brave gepensioneerde italiaanse werknemer de bejaarde baas van een familiebedrijf bruut vermoordt. En ondertussen geniet je van helder duits.

It was not the worst book I've ever had to read for school, but it was one of the most difficult ones because it was the first German one. I didn't comprehend everything 100%, but I loved the storyline.
