Perhaps I just don’t like this genre, but this book follows fanfic tropes beat-by-beat, which felt repetitive. The main problem is that I didn’t like the characters. Penny is insufferable and Tate is long-suffering; I honestly couldn’t tell why she liked Penny so much. I liked their friends, but side characters can’t make up for an annoying first-person POV. I skim-read through most of the family troubles and traumatic backstory.

Sometimes YA hits so hard, so perfectly, that you can’t help but love it. This book had me laughing, crying, kicking my feet in excitement. Yes, it is a cute, sapphic romance, but is so much more than that.

The author does a wonderful job touching on all the hard topics: grief, trauma, ptsd, the hardships of medical needs when you’re not rich, the complications of parent-child relationships, the fear around knowing (but never fully knowing) how someone feels about you, the power of found family.

It’s just — so good. It will make you feel all the feels - good and bad. But in such a way that has you always looking to hope.

Definitely going to be in my top books of the year.

i love queer stories that are nuanced and about more than JUST a relationship. i knew i loved this authors work, but this book truly sealed the deal.
penny and tate deserve nothing but love and happiness.
docked .75 because i WIIIIISSSSSHHHH we had like? an epilogue or something. i’m not a fan of the story ending right when they come together with no final wrap up.

This book was not really what I expected but I loved it! It was very emotional and deeply about mother-daughter relationships as much as it was about romance. It was a really interesting story of womanhood and woman relationships (in truly all aspects). My biggest note is that the ending felt a bit unfinished, mostly between the friends! I want to know what happened with them in the end and a little more of a wrap up for Anna would've been nice too. But overall I was very pleasantly surprised by this book and it tugged on my heartstrings a LOT. Also there should def be trigger warnings at the beginning of this book so I will add them to this review
