Wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this because I found the main character to be a little obnoxious initially, but it was sweet. Hope Floats meets country music and cooking school.

Honestly, I feel like this book had potential but left a lot to be desired.  The story is an important one, no doubt. We meet country singer  Colton Gentry in one of his lowest moments as an alcoholic with a crumbling marriage and career, who just lost his best friend. The tale that follows is one of his recovery, rediscovery of self, and reconnection with first love. Regarding the plot, it was a very well constructed novel. My disappointment stems instead from the voice of the writing.

The language and stylistic choices of the writing didn’t match the character’s voice and it felt very inconsistent throughout. Additionally, the word choice often veered on pretentiousness when the intentions behind the characters decisions were very surface level. At times, it felt like the author was using complicated language to disguise the lack of emotional depth in the characters actions and decision making.

What an excellent book club pick! This “romance” gave us so much to discuss last night at the Atlanta @beachreadsandbubbly book club. The romance descriptor is in quotes because this was more fiction than romance. Colton is a famous country music star who has to figure out his life after making some polarizing comments about guns and losing his record deal while doing a stint in rehab.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

He moves back to his small hometown, and when he thinks he’s hit rock bottom, he finds a way to reinvent himself. The book has two timelines - the present and Colton’s high school years. We learn how his relationship with his high school girlfriend helped form who he is today, and it’s nice to learn about the characters through this plot device.

Our book club found plenty of flaws within this book, questioning the feasibility of some of the decisions, twists, and choices the author made. It definitely was more of a like than a love for most of us, myself included. But I’m glad we chose it.

i love this narrator so much and he was PERFECT for this heartbreaking yet super sweet book.
