Buldozere şi excavatoare galbene hăcuiesc pământul şi piatra pe una din străzile vechi ale oraşului, stradă ce a văzut mai multă moarte decât în majoritatea războaielor moderne, iar Kay Scarpetta încetineşte jeepul închiriat aproape oprind în loc. Tulburată de distrugerea ce îi apare în faţă, rămâne cu privirea la maşinile de culoarea muştarului care muşcă sălbatic din trecutul ei.
— Ar fi trebuit să mă anunţe cineva, zise ea.
În această dimineaţă cenuşie de decembrie, intenţia ei fusese relativ nevinovată. Nu vroia decât să cedeze unei mici crize de nostalgie şi să treacă pe lângă vechea ei clădire, fără să aibă nici cea mai vagă idee că aceasta era pe cale să fie dărâmată. Ar fi trebuit să o anunţe cineva. Aşa ar fi fost politicos şi amabil. Să menţioneze acest lucru sau cel puţin să zică: „O, apropo, clădirea aia în care ai lucrat odată când erai tânără şi plină de speranţă, cu capul plin de vise, când credeai în iubire, ei bine, clădirea aceea veche de care încă îţi mai e dor şi la care ţii din toată inima va fi dărâmată”.
Unul din buldozere zvâcneşte, ridică lama pentru atac, iar violenţa mecanică, zgomotoasă, pare un avertisment, o alertă periculoasă. Ar fi trebuit să ascult, îşi zise ea privind la asfaltul crăpat şi sfărâmat. Lipsea jumătate din faţada vechii ei clădiri. Când a fost rugată să revină în Richmond, ar fi trebuit să îşi asculte instinctele.
— Am un caz la care sper că mă poţi ajuta, i-a explicat dr. Joel Marcus, actualul medic primar legist al Virginiei, cel care îi luase locul. Chiar ieri după-amiază a sunat-o, iar ea a ales să nu-şi asculte instinctele.
— Desigur, dr. Marcus, i-a zis ea la telefon, plimbându-se prin bucătăria casei din sudul Floridei. Cu ce vă pot fi de folos?
— O fată de paisprezece ani a fost găsită moartă în pat. Asta se întâmpla cam acum două săptămâni, pe la prânz. Fata fusese bolnavă de gripă.
Scarpetta ar fi trebuit să îl întrebe pe dr. Marcus motivul pentru care o sunase pe ea. De ce ea? Dar nu dădea atenţie instinctelor.
— Era acasă, lipsea de la şcoală? zise ea.
— Da.
— Singură? \'7dn timp ce vorbea amesteca o combinaţie de burbon, miere şi ulei de măsline, ţinând receptorul la ureche cu umărul.
— Da.
— Cine a descoperit-o şi care a fost cauza decesului? Turnă marinata deasupra unei fripturi slabe de vacă, într-o pungă de plastic pentru alimente.
— Mama ei a găsit-o. Nu există o cauză evidentă a decesului, zise el. Nimic suspect, numai că probele, sau mai degrabă lipsa lor, indică faptul că ea nu ar trebui să fie moartă.

Es el primer libro de esta autora y me ha gustado mucho en la forma en que escribe . En un futuro intentaré hacerme con mas de sus obras
Este libro ha sido un buen pasatiempo ,se me ha hecho corto y para nada pesado pero he de destacar varias cosas que no me han gustado:la primera es el personaje de Lucy no me gusta no me aporta nada y tampoco me gusta la relación que hay entre ella y Henri no acabo de enter para que la contra ,la segunda es la relación de una noche de Marino con la madre de la víctima me pareció muy forzada ,lo ultimo es el personaje de el forense que sustituye a Kay me parece que faltan cosas sin responder (no se si en un futuro volverá a salir ) y esas son las únicas cosas que no me han gustado .

This book was an okay read; I rated it as a three star because the investigation was interesting and well paced. However I found Kay to be a bitter and annoying character in this book. I had already found that her character was degrading in books later in the series but the beginning of this book almost made me put it down and not read it at all. Same for Lucy, she felt like a frivolous and stupid character which I found annoying (who doesn't realise how well their neighbor can see them when she's already half working in security?).
If you are already feel bothered by Kay's character in previous books, don't read this one. A week after having finished this book I would definitely rate it lower as I mostly remember the bad parts of the book.

As this series has gone on, the scenarios in these novels have grown progressively bleak. I did not enjoy this book very much, because it seemed to me that Cornwell was straining to come up with something more shocking than ever before. It takes a lot to shock people nowadays, and extremes are not as shocking as they once were. I saw too much effort in the writing: if Cornwell took a step back into examining life and death through the perceptions of these very interesting people she has introduced us to, she would regain her footing as one of the reigning queens of mystery.
Probably one of my favourites of the Scarpetta series so far.
Kay never thought that she would go back to the city that kicked her out. Everyone else said that she shouldn't go. But she went for a fourteen year-old girl whose cause of death hasn't been determined. Kay goes back to find that a lot of things have changed.
We get a bunch of perspectives in this novel and I didn't mind that. The only one I had a problem with was Dr Marcus. Cornwell went to him once and didn't really come back to him. I wish that something had happened with him, something towards the end.
I also like the way that things turn out in the end. I liked the plot and I thought that Cornwell put a lot of surprises into it. Its been really long since I've read a detective series like Kay Scarpetta and Temperance Brennan so it was a refreshing read. We get to see a more scientific parts of the detective work and I enjoy that.
The characters personal and professional stuff also get in the way a little bit here. We find that Lucy and Benton pushing Kay away a little bit because they don't want her to know about what is going on. Marino gets into a little bit of trouble. Lucy is trying to kill old habits and is paying for making an impulsive choice. Kay gets attacked and someone tries to undermine her authority in her professional field. Everyone has struggles in "Trace" and it was interesting to see how they dealt with their issues.
On to the next Scarpetta novel, whatever one it will be!
