Hope Flames, Hope #1, by Jaci Burton
Grade: C-

“Love scares all of us, Emma. It’s probably the scariest thing any of us will ever do.”

Emma Burnett is coming back to Hope, Oklahoma to finally open her own veterinary practice and be closer to her family. After a bad relationship in college Emma has spent the last few years doing nothing but focusing on her dream of opening her own practice and with that finally happening she starts to realize how lonely her life is. When emma meets officer Luke McCormack Emma realizes that all the guy out there are bad and she might just open up her life and her heart again.

Officer Luke McCormack has sworn off relationships after his ex-wife and his mother took off. Luke meets the new vet when getting care for his police dog and he can’t help but be entranced by the sexy new doctor. As time goes on Luke finds himself unable to stay away from Emma and soon finds himself in a relationship he never knew he wanted. As things heat up in Hope, Luke realizes how much he cares for Emma and how far he’ll got to protect her.

I am a huge Jaci Burton fan but I found myself really disappointed with Hope Flames almost from the first few chapters. This book is only three hundred and twenty pages but I felt like it dragged for the majority of it and never found a rhythm. There were multiple times when I thought about other things or moving on to a new book because I had just lost interest. The sex scenes are classic Burton and keep the book from being really boring but for the most part it’s lacking the magic of her books.

I liked Luke and Emma but I felt that their story could have been told in a novella and not a full book. These two danced around each other for way too long and never seemed to really connect. I get that they both have issues but they took so long to talk or share any type of true feelings. I found a lot of their relationship very predictable, along with most of the storyline. I was never surprised and I think this helped with my boredom.

I am shocked that I feel this way about a Jaci Burton book but I am not giving up on this series. I am very interested in Emma’s sister and Luke’s brother. I know neither of them will be together but I’m eagerly anticipating both of their future book. I have high hopes for this series because it is Jaci Burton and that woman knows how to write some romance.

Eh... I've had better. But this was good enough to finish.

Loved it

Absolutely loved this book and the characters. There is romance, steam, fluff and action with a meaty plot. That makes you feel like your there rooting for the characters. Definitely going to get the next one.

I enjoyed this book. It was exciting and hot. It wasn't quite as amazing as her Play by Play books, but that's only because I'm a sucker for athletes :)
This was a nice start to a series and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more, especially about Molly and Carter!

I really enjoyed this sweet fun loving story with a little excitement tossed in. She had me at Police Officer and his dog! I love a sweet romance with animal best friends. I will be continuing on with this series for sure.

The narration was great.

I checked this out because I wanted a light audiobook to have on while doing errands, and because there's a dog on the cover. I like the premise of a series that takes place in a smaller town in Oklahoma in a place that lacks pretension, so the series as a whole would probably be more interesting, kind of like a small-town soap opera. This was a fine romance novel, but I found it the characters and story a bit bland. Plus, and maybe this is more noticeable in audiobook form, the author uses the sentence "You/He/She/That is awesome!" so many times that it's awkward and redundant.

I don't know why I'm giving this 3 stars...it was so boring. Yawn.

Very slow writing and too direct for my taste. The romance wasn’t the greatest and I was not invested in the story. It was okay overall and I did love the vet/police romance and job aspect.
