Not a murder mystery because there's no opportunity for theorising. The result is a strange two-part novel, which is disjointed and confusing. However, I did enjoy the opening few pages where Watson meets Holmes, and I can see why other novels (perhaps with a more sound plot?) have been very successful.

Downgraded to 3 stars to put it into context with the other Holmes-stories I‘ve read in the meantime.

Is this a mystery or a revenge narrative?

I would give it a 3.5 stars if I could. I didn't mind the first part of the story but when it came to part 2 for the most part I just found it boring and like i was reading another book. that is why for me I am on'y giving it a 3.5 stars.

“It's quite exciting," said Sherlock Holmes, with a yawn.”
“There are fifty who can reason synthetically for one who can reason analytically.”
“It is a mistake to confound strangeness with mystery.”
“When a man writes on a wall, his instinct leads him to write above the level of his own eyes.”
Awesome, really awesome - it had to be, for it brought forth one of the best fictional characters of all time in Sherlock Holmes. It is beautiful how Watson paints you picture of Holmes' nature. I would have given full stars but the story of criminal given in second part is bit boring making me take that last star.
