Uhhh
Not quite sure what to say. This book was like an acid trip. Supposedly metaphorical? Maybe? But a lot of good writing nuggets to hold on to at least. Hence the 3 rating and not a 2.

This is one of the strangest and confusing books I have ever read [or remember reading]. Told by alternating characters - Summer and Winter - teenagers who have been left alone on an island with a ton of packaged food and a dog, they slowly, and beautifully, reveal a past of mystery and disaster.
Their father invented a way for people to get free internet access after the tech companies tried to cash in on everyones addiction to the net. At first he was a hero, but some used this access to commit hideous acts of defiance so he set about finding a way to destroy the whole system.
Eventually he and his daughters fled to this remote spot to escape the companies who wanted to steal his ideas and the world fell further into dystopia.
The prose is delicious, using descriptive language in distinctly personal ways for each character and the reading is delightful as a result; however, the story is confused by the different interpretations and tests the readers willingness to discover the truth - whatever that may be.
Worth it, but don't expect an easy time of it.

Dnf'd at 2% when they ate their dog. I've already read one book this month where a dog was eaten and that was enough for me.
Started reading this as a potential novel for Yr 8/Yr 9, decided I didn't want to teach it about halfway through

βTo be aware of the risks and wade in any way β that is life, dear Summer. Your glass-bottomed boat may crack. But to have sailed it and seen into the soul of another realm. Isnβt the wonder worth it?β
Identical twin sisters Summer and Winter live alone on a remote island, sheltered from the fallout of a mysterious event that has laid waste to the rest of the world. They survive on rations stockpiled by their father and spend their days reading and rereading their motherβs collection of classic literature β until the arrival of a mysterious stranger upends their carefully constructed reality.
At first, Edward is a welcome distraction. But who is he really, and why has he come? As love blooms and the world stops spinning, the secrets of the girlsβ past begin to unravel and escape is the only option.
A sumptuously written story of love and grief; of sisterly affection and the ultimate sacrifice; of technological progress and climate catastrophe; of an enigmatic bear and a talking whale: The End of the World Is Bigger than Love is unlike anything youβve heard before.
My Thoughts
This is one of the strangest books I have ever listened to, but do you know what, it was endearing and quite compelling.
I really enjoyed Summer and Winters' references to other children's literature throughout their story and the characters, although quirky were really interesting.
Because I've never read anything like this before, I'm going to give it a βοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ for uniqueness!
