The casual racism and misogyny in this book is wild.

Oh, how I wish I hadn't seen the terrible film adaptation prior to reading this! There were enough new and creepy things that had been cut for time to keep me interested, but I wish that the main plot points had not been spoiled for me.

I went back and forth between liking Lou and hating him. It really depended on the day in his narrative. I wish that Rachel had been given more to do, because she had potential. Jud was interesting but very much supporting cast.

There were parts of the book that were truly creepy and unnerving, and there's a whole section that had me very sad (near tears). I was very engaged and read this very quickly! I had scheduled breaks, but found myself unable to put it down!

ok look i get it — i’m stephen’s biggest hater. i hate the way he writes about women & sex & how long and drawn out everything is. his short stories are alright, and every novel ive read (this being the third after the shining and it) has much potential to be a great short story/much shorter novel. this was not as much of a trek as it, and not as cringeworthy to me as the shining, but it fell so flat. and he thinks this is his scariest? i can’t even begin to understand that. if you know you like his detail-ridden writing, but also wince at the way he writes women: this one might be for you. our main female characters are much less pathetic & sexualized, and the relationship between husband & wife is more healthy than i’ve come to expect from king’s writing. but he still finds a way to be horny at the weirdest moments. i dunno man…i wish i got it…i really wish i did because i love his ideas and the scary parts ARE scary. oh well
