I liked learning about Ann. Her story was very interesting and oddly enough I had never heard of her before. The thing I did not appreciate was the illustrations. I don't think it fully fit the book. It kind of took away from the story in my eyes.

Two stars for the story, four stars for the illustrations (three star average). I was underwhelmed by the writing, and I wanted more from the story - I didn't think it lived up to the promised subtitle of "larger-than-life," and honestly, outside of Texans who know about her already, I can't see why children would be interested in reading this book. But the illustrations are beautiful and full of great little details (plus I know the illustrator!).

A story about a real life Leslie Knope. Super inspiring with the loveliest illustrations.

I had higher expectations for this book. Governor Richards was a sharp and sparkling woman who deserves better than the quiet lulling book produced.

This nonfiction narrative tells us the early life of Texas governor Ann Richards all the way up to her life as governor.
I read this with my 8 and 9 year old. Here’s their review:
They said that the story was showing “girl power” vibes. They said they learned that women can be anything they want to be. They both agreed it was a bit long, but they enjoyed it nonetheless.

Meh, looking up to political figures and idolizing them isn’t my favorite type of book.
I know it’s important to show girls they can make a difference just like a man can is important, so overall, this book is an okay one. I appreciate the main message: girls should reach for their dreams and can whatever a man can accomplish.
