I'm glad the book didn't take the technology-ruins-all approach and instead showed how it is more about how you use the technology.

I love that this book doesn’t shame the other family members for using technology and instead Violet figures out a way to pull them back into a family dinner routine again.

Okay I love Peter Reynolds but this just did not hit for me. I have never been a fan of allegories about technology

I think many of us will read this story differently after the pandemic. I wonder how many families had started to grow away from family time at the table - too many scheduled activities. I wonder how many families found attention drawn to time on devices instead of time spent together at the table. Whether it's a shared meal or perhaps time playing a board game, I think the pandemic probably brought more time together around the family table.
Without being didactic or in-your-face, Reynolds crafts a beautiful story that says so much in what isn't said.

Love this story about family time. Put down your devices and spend some time with your family!

The illustrations are beautiful and emotive, but the metaphor of the literally shrinking table made it difficult for me to suspend disbelief. This magical realism element removes the book from the sphere of daily life, which it is supposed to be addressing, and will make more sense to adults than children.

Cute and thought-provoking. I thought the solution was clever. Would be a great read aloud with discussion afterwards, especially for elementary school students.
