This book never quite hooked me. We follow Folda and Gormflaith two women from opposing Irish mythological races. Gormflaith is evil and conniving always seeking both her and her son’s advantage. Folda is a healer sent to gain the favor of King Brain Boru. In the backdrop their people seek to find each other and destroy the other race once and for all. I wouldn’t say the book bad or poorly written. There were some decisions that made the book hard to follow. The book spans 18 years, which felt like too long of a time frame. It’s told in alternating first person narrative, I did not enjoy this format. Shauna does write convincing kids and we do have one kid around quite a bit in the second half of the book. There is a lot of “all men are bad” commentary in this book, which gets old. The magic isn’t always consistent, at times it’s exhausting to use others it’s not. My biggest complaint is that it’s about 87% setup. The last bit of the book was interesting. Overall, the book feels like a setup for the next books, not much happens. I wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, this book wasn’t for me. I will not be continuing the series.

This was well written and I look forward to the rest of the trilogy. I did struggle a bit the balance between the two POV characters - they're both complex, but one is basically good and likeable and the other is... evil? I just feel like in a book set up like this it shouldn't be quite so easy to take sides.
