Interesting. This Star Trek universe seems to be a little darker than TOS. I enjoy that.

3.5/5 stars. I feel like Star Trek works better on the big screen or the television series than on the page. All things aside, it was a fast and fun read!

Plot-wise it wasn't really anything impressive but thumbs up for leaving Bones in charge of the Enterprise that was something I never thought I needed to see.

Nothing in this prequel to Star Trek Into Darkness enhances the story of the movie, unlike the prequel to the previous movie.

Sows the seeds for what's to come in 'Star Trek Into Darkness' and does enough name-dropping to please those familiar with TOS characters.

This doesn't seem as integral to the plot of the new movie as the earlier countdown was to the previous movie, but it was still a good Trek story.

As a part of the official graphic novel collection, this book is nicely bound and has some excellent notes about the stories it contains. The stories themselves, however, are not that great. Countdown serves as a lead-in to the Kelvin Universe Star Trek stories and bridges STTNG to KU. It relied a little too heavily on pulling in "guest stars" from the TNG crew which distracted from other elements. The Gold Key classic comic (as I'm sure will be the case with many of them) was terribly silly. A good slice of Star Trek comics history, but not a very good story. Two stars for the stories, one for the presentation. I look forward to book two which retells Harlan Ellison's version of City on the Edge of Forever.

I expected Countdown to Darkness to feature more of the characters and settings from the film Into Darkness, but it was a prequel in only the slightest sense. Kirk and Spock become embroiled in an alien civil war that tests the length to which they'll adhere to the Prime Directive. This experience is key to the opening sequence of Into Darkness, but as the comic does not feature either of the movie's villains, it doesn't really tie into the majority of the film.

The graphic novel also features a known Star Trek hero as a villain, suggesting this isn't an alternate reality as much as it is a mirror one, which is disappointing. References to the crew's other exploits, such as "the Archon incident" left me wondering what else I've missed.

In an attempt to replicate the smash success of J.J. Abrams' first Star Trek film, IDW once again produces an authorized prequel to the new film Star Trek Into Darkness. On a routine survey mission to Phaedus, the crew of the Enterprise find themselves immersed in a planetary civil war. Kirk and Spock grapple with the Prime Directive when someone long thought dead reemerges. From a story conceived by Star Trek Into Darkness writer Orci and regular comic series scribe Johnson, Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness delivers a complete and powerful story, immersed in Star Trek lore and littered with abundant clues about the new feature. The graphic novel achieves its primary goal of creating excitement for Star Trek Into Darkness.
