Oh my god. I'm in tears writing this, having just finished this book. Wow. What an absolutely AMAZING read. I've never felt so many different things throughout one book, never been on such a rollercoaster of emotions. A fab first read for 2017, finished in one sitting. Will definitely be reading more of Patrick Ness' works!

Just a short review to express my thoughts.

I heard about this book for some time, and I can say, I was very curious and wanted to read it. And lo and behold! my library had it!

The book was absolutely stunning, the illustrations are dark, haunting but also very beautiful. Though they tend to give you goosebumps when we get to the big monster.

The story itself was beautiful. It was a story about loss, about truth and about saying what is on your mind. Also deals with children and sick parents.

And really, while most of the book just spooked me out (the stories told by the monster add to that), the ending was just beautiful, and sad. I cried a few tears.

I would really recommend this book to all. Read it!

Thanks to Jake Bishop for recommending this book which I would not have picked up otherwise. This is a wonderful book, a beautiful book, a terrible book, and an emotional book. I also strongly believe it is highly concentrated therapy in book form for kids an parents, for dealing with illness, death and I feel any process of grief and accepting bad circumstances that are not within your influence and power.

I cried...a lot...and loved this book. It explores what happens inside us that we usually keep in and in that, it is wonderful.

Beautiful book..

Grief overwhelms you at first, then it gradually wears down until it becomes easier to carry around. It never really leaves, but you learn to patiently bear its weight.

It's been ten years since my mom passed away, and this book brought back the pain. It's an excellently written book, able to communicate the grief of losing one's parent at a young age. It doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable emotions: the worry, the frustration, the isolation, the anger, the wish to hold on for a little bit longer, the wish for suffering to end, the regrets, the wish somebody or something would make everything better again. The book won't lift the burden of grieving, but it offers a brief respite. Highly recommended for all ages.

I just cound't stop crying during the last 30 pages of this book... It speaks about emotions that I think many people can relate to but which are rarely spoken about.
