even on second read, this fucking slaps

is it vague and vibes-only? yeah. does it feel strongly twilight inspired in the romance dynamic? oh boy yes. is it still a fun time with gorgeous writing? also yes.

At Part II things finally got interesting, which came together in Part III. The writing is not all great, it often repeated manner of speech and had more potential. The story itself was very unique and interesting and was totally worth it in the end.

I tried to like this book. I tried so hard, but I just did not. This is marketed as dark academia and a new adult darkish romance and I just could not get into it.

So the FMC is deaf and because of that, she can hear ghosts and things like that in the dark right and the magic system is never fully explained and explored and it’s very confusing and I just don’t enjoy it. When I pick up a dark academia book, I typically expect some sort of critique of academics and academia, and this could have been a book that explored disabilities within academia, especially those who are hearing impaired, and how they can struggle and how some professors don’t take that seriously but it doesn’t. It uses the fact that the F MC is not doing well in her classes as just applaud device to push the two main characters together for the romance.

And there’s no real depth to the characters we’re getting a lot of telling us who these characters are without actually showing us who these characters are so you were getting told this characterization, but you’re not actually seeing it and what you’re seeing is sometimes in direct opposition to what we’re supposed to be seeing and it just doesn’t work. For example, when the F MC goes to her teaching assistant to be like hey I need help because he offered to hurt to help her. He laughs in her face and tells her well if you need help come to me during office hours all because someone else is there and then he’s like oh dang I kind of feel bad so then he goes up to her afterwards and says hey why don’t you come to my house and I will let you do this. You have a standing invitation at my house That’s weird. That is really weird. You are 21 years old. This is an 18 year-old girl and you are doing that that is really weird. I’m sorry. Like dude you were already breaking the valve that you took to stay away from her. Don’t treat her like you have no sense. Stop being a hypocrite and just accept yourself accept that you like her move on.

I don’t think I’m the target audience. I was expecting something like ninth house, something creepy and scary, that would get my heart beating. Overall, this felt very mild to me. I did like the rep though abs felt like the story was unique.

I enjoyed this, kept me interested throughout. It would have been 5 stars if the magic/world was explained a bit more, I felt quite lost and confused at times and had to reread parts thinking I’ve missed it. I liked seeing the push and pull with Colton and his feelings towards Delaney. I loved how strong and determined Delaney was and that she didn’t just a pushover with what she wanted. Wasn’t a heavy fantasy read so was easy to get into!
