I liked the story and the raw emotions of it, and how it wasn't so much driven by plot than by the characters' feelings and pain. That was a really strong part of the book.

However, the French translation was clearly weird at times, like someone white and old writing it haha. And the dialogs were also a little weird and didn't feel quite like something people would say. So in turn the character interactions weren't really strong. The romance especially didn't work for me.

Enjoyed the story and the Feels, but I felt like the translation and maybe the dialog/character interactions got in the way of me enjoying it even more.

Anyway another instalment of "should I really read French translations because after studying translation I can feel it when they suck"

"Sometimes people need reminding they matter, more than they need reminding that they are alive, because sometimes being alive just isn't enough."

This book could not have been more relevant. Tyler Johnson is a story about a young black boy who is murdered by the police and the grief that follows for his family and community. Told through the eyes of his twin brother, we get a raw look at a teenager grappling with the unfair death of his brother. What I loved about this perspective is that the way Marvin copes is not stereotypically conventional because he is an adolescent. Watching Marvin move from sadness to anger to action was inspiring, but painful. I would have loved a little more character development of Tyler before his death; I was not rocked by his death because I didn't really know him as a person. But if you are looking for a book to inspire you to fight for black lives, I would definitely recommend.

I'm really unsure of what rating to give this book. It made me feel so much hate, and it's that reason that I either want to give it 1 star or 5 stars. I know it's what we were supposed to feel, but I just hated it so much. The racism made me so angry. I did not enjoy this book. The fact that it was all centered around the white people in some way belittling or separating the black people just made me entirely angry. Yes I'm glad I read this book but I don't really want to read anything like it again. This anger isn't good for me.
The protest in this book was very inspiring, but it's so hard to believe that the cops were there to protect them when really they just wanted to 'rid the streets of the thugs' aka kill the black people.
Once again, I really loved the family dynamic, and the friendships. I liked the relationship that blossomed, and I love how Marvin always showed his true colours. He's such an honest character, saying what he thinks and feels. And as soon as he realised he didn't want what other people did for him, he did something about it. None of this denial shit. I really like him as a MC. We need more people like him.

the writing was a tad clunky and repetitve, and i definitely could have done without that shoddily done sex scene, but the story has a lot of heart to it. it's just missing some editing that could have made it more successful imo
