Really enjoyed. A very sad but beautiful book. Didn’t quite go where I thought it predictably would which was a nice surprise.
Graphic: Sexual assault
Moderate: Rape

I would like to give it more stars but this book has destroyed the little mental health I had

I get to identify hard with the main character, Laurel.
Since the last year, I have wanted to read this book, because I had lost someone, too, so the title caught my attention. Still, now that I've read it I regret waiting so long to do it because I didn't choose the correct dates to read it, while I was reading it another book by my favorite author came out, so I prefer to read it over this book, and I get away from the story so long.
I'm planning to reread it so I can concentrate only on Laurel and her story, anyway, I like the book.
I recommend it especially if you have lost someone who meant so much to you.
Kinda spoilers ahead.
Sometimes Laurel describes anger for her sister because May has abandoned her, I felt that so much, sometimes I felt angry at my grandmother because she gave up and leave me behind, and also I felt so bad for thinking it, but with this book, I get to feel better about a lot of thinking that was coming through my head so often when my grandma died, because knowing that Laurel had that thinking too make me understand that at some point (without being so extremists) it's normal to be angry, to be afraid, to felt left behind, so it helped me a lot with that kind of stuff.

I would have gone with one star but because of the cool people Laurel writes her letters to and because at a few times some beautiful ideas shimmer through I'm going with two stars but sadly, looking at style and execution of the book it's not really worth two stars.
Most of the book is written in the voice of a ten year old hanging out with high school students, even though the main character is in high school herself. Laurel seems way too immature for her age and her letters read like bad diary entries. Whenever she reports dialogue it's often almost painful to read because of the main character's voice and because of what people are actually saying to each other and how certain things just seemed be brushed away as if they're not important.
All the characters fall flat, especially Laurel herself because none of who she really is shines true and sadly the other characters in the book get the forced kind of specialness that makes them not special anymore.
It's too bad because the book could have been good with its premise and if the topics addressed would have been dealt with in a better way it could have actually worked but everything that has happened to Laurel simply falls flat because of the way she talks about it and the way other people handle it when they are opened up to.

"When we are in love, we are both completely in danger and completely saved."
Actual rating: 3.5 stars
I don't know how to explain this book. Somehow, the story is just dull and boring. But, this character, Laurel is so complex and confusing. She is okay, but deep down she is not okay. She loves her (dead) sister so much.
I think this book is really depressing in the "Laurel" way.
