3.5/5 stars. *forgive misspellings of names as I listened to the audiobook.

For what it was (a YA mystery romance), it was an enjoyable read. Devro’s betrayal was predictable. However, less predictable was the reveal about Ross’s mom. It was the ultimate betrayal to learn that her mom had successfully manipulated and stymied Ross from forming any relationships beyond those with her aunt and mother. I’m less interested in reading future sequels, only because I’m not sure if the “budding relationship turned enemies” trope is compelling enough to sustain the sequel. For me, the mystery and fun of the Gambit was the most appealing part of this first book. Furthermore, some of the side characters were more engaging and entertaining than the two primary protagonists.

THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!!!! I love it so much. The entire idea of the gambit was  just so creative and it was a nice break from my usual Fantasy books to read something with a heists, high stakes and an amazing romance. It was like if someone mashed The Inheritance Games, Six of Crows, Now You See Me and Ocean’s Eleven, which are some of my top books and movies ever.

I loved Ross (Main Character), not just only through the mystery and heists but also her character development.
To go from trusting no one, to being vulnerable, honest, finally admitting she has trust issues (which was so real tbh) - trusting someone and then getting betrayed again.
DEV’S BETRAYAL WAS SUCH A SHOCK! WHERE DID THAT COME FROM???

MMC was sooooo charming, he had my kicking my feet while reading this. I completely understood why Ross went weak at the knees for him. I loved the relationships that developed between these characters, they were all so amazing :D.
I loved how she made up with Noelia in the end, but I HATED HER MUM, like go away evil lady!

The twists and turns in this book are amazing the ending had my jaw on the floor to say the least. Overall this was an amazing book and I loved it so much, can’t wait until the second book comes out in November I will be reading it immediately!!!

2.5
Interesting premise and I liked the parts where there was action. Although they were a little few and far between. The pacing didn’t help either being inconsistent.

The characters were not very fleshed out and the predictability of the MC just beating all odds unscathed made the book a little less enjoyable.

I didn’t feel there was enough world building and I’m hoping the second book will do this or maybe yeh movie will.
