If you are going into this looking for something that gives the same spark as between two fires do not pick this up.  It obviously is not a bad book. If you are really into DND and fantasy you will love this. Me personally? I love dnd but rarely touch fantasy novels (personal preference. Something something Sci-Fi better. I just like knowing that things have a scientific explanation that doesnt involve magic spell go burr). I enjoyed the book at the very beginning, it was fun, cute, drew me in. But somewhere in the middle it started feeling repetitive, and by the end I was dragging myself to the end.

There were a lot of twists and turns but they didn't really help anything. Too many twists get a little loss in a world where the rules and lore get tangled outside the rules of normal life. I LOVED between two fires but This book wasnt a hit for me. Maybe because I was expecting it to be as good.

However my biggest gripe and ick in this book. In most books, the worst thing you can do is write out singing and songs. Oh my god. This book has some singing. A lot of songs. A lot of the lore is in the songs. The songs you can not hear.  A LOT of it. It frustrates me like no other. By the 5 sea shanty I was over it. Im sorry. I hate it so much.

I loved all the characters tho. Norrigal my queen, get behind me.  And at times the unpredictability was exciting..until it started to overstimulate me.

Also the ending was unsatisfying. It didnt heal anything in me. Didnt make the singing worth it. Not at all. In fact with all the singing I wouldve expected some grand theatrical ending that tied everything together and made me say "oh yes! Give me more"

I actually put the book down for several weeks. I had to switch to the audio book to get through it. On 2x speed. That being said if u like fantasy and overstimulation this is the book for you.

Would have been four stars if the ending didn't make me go "that's it? That's how it ends?" And not in a cliffhanger type of way.... Just a "you ended it like that?" There were so many other opportunities in my opinion for the book to end and was left unsatisfied.
Great humor though made me laugh a lot.
I love Norrigal
And I am Kinch Na Shannack coded.

Wow, such a wild and amusing fantasy. Very cool magic system that never really needed a hefty explainer. I appreciate how much the author shows instead of tells how things work. You just discover what's possible in the moment when something happens. The characters were multi-layered and not cookie-cutter, in my opinion. Sure you could fit them into classic dnd classes, but they felt like so much more than that, with unique histories, consistent personalities, and interesting individualized arcs. It took a bit of time to establish the stakes of the plot objective, at least to a degree that felt more significant than the mysterious underpinnings of the story allowed it to be at first, but that created some solid pacing where new information is layered on or exposed in an organic way and the intrigue builds over time. This book was also so so funny. I laughed and smiled a lot. The humor was sometimes crass, sometimes dark, often situational and really worked to reinforce the essence of our main character. My not giving this 5 stars is more because it took me a while to get through it, but I can't say for sure whether that was a reflection of my own attention capacities. I was hooked from page 1 but started to feel sluggish about 40pgs in, and I'm not sure if that was just a feeling of confusion as there was quite a bit of exposition asides early on that would take me out of the moment. But it grabbed my attention again with each new chapter. All the world building was essential and well done, especially the attention to detail with the diverse languages, cultures, national politics, histories, and even inventing a card game that felt thorough and real (my understanding is the card game is real and can be played, though the instructions are not told in the book, rather you get the POV of watching Kinch play during a very comical but tense crossroads in the story). I am really looking forward to reading the next published book which is actually a prequel and then hoping for more in the series to continue the journey. I found the events of this story to be really impossible to predict and I was surprised by the way it developed, with just enough loose ends and twists to ponder what's to come.
