Unique and entertaining. A good book to listen to while doing other things. I thought the noir mood was cute. I’ll have to check out the tv series if it’s still accessible.

Dresden is certainly a beleaguered soul, but prevailed in the end. Not sure I will continue the series. He was so much beleaguered—couldn’t win for losing.

An interesting, unique concept. Private eye, snarky wizard, consults for police department.
I love the character of Harry Dresden. It is not bad for a start to a series. It can be rough at some points. There are times of a lot of information, but many times it is told through the mind of the main character so it has some snark to it which is fun.
Overall a good start to a series. I've heard it is the weakest book and the series really gets going at book 3ish... if this is true then the rest of the series must be amazing because this was not bad at all.

ahahaha yeah no.

before i begin, i need to address the two elephants in the room:
this is one of my first ever one star reviews. ever. i don’t like hating things and typically, i find at least something minor that i like to boost it up a star. this was not the case for this book.
second, harry dresden is your classic modern day misogynist who has somehow duped himself into believing that his “old fashioned ways” make him inherently superior to other men, even when his efforts are clearly unwanted by any and every female character present in the story. congratulations dipshit, you opened the door for her. now please stop making unsolicited remarks about her body. upon meeting a new character with two x chromosomes, he must first take a minimum of half a page to describe her boobs, her butt, and her perfectly applied, not too-garish but totally noticeable, makeup.
i don’t write bad reviews for things. i just don’t but i’m making an exception. this book made me so incredibly uncomfortable that i had to stop reading at points and beyond that, it’s not even that good in the first place. all the men on this app are going to get so incredibly butthurt by that. hey guys - feeling uncomfortable because the main character you heard was a funny, chill wizard detective felt the need to describe the boobs of a corpse is not “being sensitive.” it’s fucking weird. there are so many men in the comments of every review i’ve seen saying, “thanks for saying it’s sexist, i just bought it and now i can’t wait.” respectfully, you’re not funny nor are your comments wanted or cared about. shut up

Huh. Another book I forgot to record on Goodreads? Maybe I read it before I really started tracking everything...

Anyway. I read this several years ago on the recommendation of a friend and was just not that into it. I like the IDEA of it, and there are interesting details about the limitations of magic, but the many levels of sexism just turned me right off and as a whole it hit more on tropes that I dislike than tropes I love.

Fast forward to today, and I finally heeded the recommendation that I try the series as audiobooks because James Marsters does a great job with them. I agree. Still didn't like the book, though.

(The other recommendation offered is to give it to at least book four before giving up. We'll see.)

I have heard so many good things and been told to start this series so many time and I FINALLY did. The only thing I can say about that is, “why have I not read it earlier”.

I loved everything about this book and world. I loved Harry, I loved his PI business. I loved the world and the magic system, the writing them humor just everything about it.

The world a little bit reminded me of Kim Harrison’s Hollows series, just a little in a good way, but it still was very different, and fresh.

I liked we get a bit if mystery, mixed with magic, and humor and a bit of smut inn a different kind of way.

As mentioned I liked the magic system in this book and Im looking very much forward to see how much more there is.

Harry, I don’t know what else to say about him but that I loved him, his character and humor but loyalties to people. But also that he has flaws and is a bit complicated. I can’t wait to learn more about him and see what he can do.

One of my favorite parts was Bob the skull, not sure why but I thought it was brilliant funny and a bit unique.

While this book was defiantly an introduction into this world and the characters, it was super fun and enjoyable.

I for one am hooked and can’t wait to dive into the second book.

I listened to the audio book that was narrated by James Marsters who did an outstanding job. I loved every minute of it.

I rate this book 5★  I could have rated it lower but it was a five star for me at the time and it pulled me out of a slump which is always great.
