I have been trying (and failing) to get this review to post for a few hours now. I cannot for the life of me get the darn gifs to work. I am now retyping this for about the sixth time, so please forgive me if my writing is no longer succinct.

I’ll start by saying I think that this might be the first horror novel I have ever read. I am happy to report that I was not disappointed.

The story begins with a side-story that doesn’t honestly have much to do with the main plot of the book (other than involving the same monsters). I did, however, actually enjoy each of the different side-stories. They explained how the monsters had attacked in previous instances and helped to build the suspense for the main characters (sort of an “I know what you should be afraid of and you don’t yet” scenario).

I’ll be honest, I was pretty glad April was the first to go. She drove me nuts. Why invite yourself on a trip and proceed to be miserable the entire time?! She sat and pouted for most of her short lived time in the book. It annoyed me that she caused characters I cared about more to be put in precarious situations (i.e. Ryan and Lauren).

Speaking of…*sigh* poor Lauren. I guess I should have figured we wouldn’t be getting a cheesy love story happy ending out of this book. I did feel pretty bad for Ryan though, being put in a situation where he had to decide whether to save what could have been the love of his life…..or just HIS LIFE. We can sit and judge him for it, but I don’t know how noble I would be in that situation either.

Then came the annoyance at Sawyer constantly trying to run out and “save April”, at Jane for trying to open the door for “the shadowy figure standing on the deck”, and at both Jane and Ryan for not dead bolting the darn door after Jane stupidly tries to open it! Come on guys, have we never seen a horror movie before?! I have to admit though, as annoyed as I was, I definitely expected it.

In the end, my worst fear finally came to pass. I spent most of the book fearing for poor Oona’s life. I don’t know why it didn’t bother me to lose main characters as long as I knew the DOG was ok. I can deal with many things in a book, however a detailed description of the death of a doggo is NOT one of those things, so I'm glad we didn't get a full recount of it.

In true horror fashion, Jane, our lone survivor, is finally rescued….or is she? She quickly realizes her escape attempt is leading her right back to the woooooods!

Ultimately, the story was predictable in many places but I still gave it 3 stars for the sheer fact that I found myself curled up tightly under my blankets, shivering and jumping at every sound and shadow.

I did really like this.... until the ending
Wtf was that.... It was really bad.
We also never got to learn anything about the monsters, what happened to April.
The character dynamics were a bit weird as well.
Yeah idk, I liked this, until I really didn't

The name of this book says it all. Nice and creepy. The first part was a little boring apart from the prologue, but the second half was great. I'm starting to like this author's work and will continue her books.
