Madeline, written by Ludwig Bemelmans (1939), is a lighthearted story to read. It is about a young girl who needed her appendix removed. It is a story that could be read during read aloud time in a first or second grade classroom. The pictures could be used a discussion starters. The teacher could display a picture and have the students describe what they see.

I absolutely loved Madeline and am embarrassed to not have come across it before. The art-style feels well ahead of its time and is often mimicked now in modern children's literature - the sweeping city scenes of Paris alongside the long, thin perspective of Madeline's boarding school are a treat. However, it is Madeline herself, rather than the landscape, that steals the show. She is feisty, willful and completely at home with being herself. What's nice about it? It's something that either her teachers (nuns) are happy with or cannot control. In that respect, it reminded me a little of Emily Hughes' Wild

I loved Madeline when I was little.

My grandparents and parents read this book to me when I was a child and I adored it. In fact, I can still recite the entire book. When my daughter asked that my granddaughter be given books for her first birthday party, this was, of course, my first choice. When my grandson, who is three, reminded me that his sister needed to share, I read it to him and he was as enchanted as I knew he would be. And the legacy is passed on.

I LOVED THE BOOKS AND THE SHOW SOOOO MUCH AS A KID
