Ignore the fact that this is bdsm. The fact is alluded to but the action of it is vague and almost an out of body experience which is how we the reader see it. This was a story so tender and full of love it was impossible not to enjoy it.

A nice read about a couple of very alpha males, trying to figure out life post Marines and DADT. There was a bit of BDSM themes here, but they were fairly light, including the one flogging scene, just how I like my BDSM books. There was a bit more family angst than I'd have liked, from both sides, and I'd have liked a bit more resolution from Gunny's family there at the end.

My only real complaint was the sheer amount of bigotry and homophobia in this book, and I started to complain about having to see it so much in my books, but then I remembered that in reality, these men and women deal with it every day, every time they dare to show some affection in public, so I decided to just shut my own mouth about the amount of it in the book. Not really important, in the big picture of real life.

This is a tale of an established couple who for the first time in 22 yrs are finally able to think about being open about their relationship. There was some internal, emotional angst as they try to navigate and plan for their new life together, especially as they hit a few speed bumps as they reveal their secret.

Overall a great story showing the fierce desire, love and loyalty these two had for each other.

Read the free short story, so glad that this was written to a full story. Really enjoyed the characters.

★★★¾.

Gunther Duchene and Macalister Jones have been best friends for 22 yrs and exclusive lovers for the last 10 years. Mac was part of the elite scout snipers, a Marine Corps special-forces team now at 42, he was looking to retirement. But what that meant for his hookup with his BF was still up in the air because as much as they cared for each other, they came from generations of military men. Even though the president just repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, same sex love isn’t acceptable in Military homes. So how will they tell their families? Could they just live in silence? What are they willing to risk to be together?

I enjoyed it but it was lacking just a little something. I do love Gunny & Mac's steadfast devotion to each other. That's a long time of love. The writing was okay but I was just needed an extra layer of depth.

This is one of those perfect short stories - fully immerses you in the story, you have a start middle and end, it feels like a lot longer and leaves you both satified and wanting more at the same time!
I liked Gunny and Mac when I read this when it was first published in the DRitC event - Gunny insecure despite his occupation, Mac making assumptions. Great short read.

1.4.21 reread - still a grand example of a short story - history, chemistry, hot and resolution. One of my my favourite DRitC stories still.
