First off I have to start with the fact that I love this author. I don't think I've read anything I don't like from her yet!. And this book is no exception. I'm very happy that the short story that was written for the LIAW event for the MM Romance Group here on Goodreads has been expanded. Short stories are great, but hey, let's be honest, I'm greedy and I always want more *grin* And boy does this deliver!

Gunny and Mac are great characters. Even though they aren't barely out of their teens, SJD Peterson manages to make these 40+ year old guys hot and super sexy. The little bit of kink added some spice to the story and was worked in brilliantly. So overall a story that hit a lot of my high notes and one I finished off in record time.

I know this was originally a short story, but I didn’t read that, just this. So my review is going to solely based on reading this version of Beyond Duty. I feel at a slight disadvantage because I don’t know what was changed and/or added.

This longer version was a sweet and simple read. I am a fan of stories that feature older men coming out later in life. I also like a bit of light BDSM with my bears.

Overall, I liked it, but nothing really happened. I felt like I was coming in at the middle-end of the story. I would’ve loved some “before” scenes of the Gunny and Mac, see how their love developed, instead of being told about it. I also didn’t really care about Mac’s brother and he didn’t really add much to the plot.

Like I said, this was a simple read. No muss, no fuss. You can tell that Mac and Gunny truly loved each other even without the “before” scenes. The coming out was heartfelt and wonderful and the wedding was pretty perfect.

I wouldn’t mind reading another story featuring these two.

3 stars.

I have heard that the transition from military life can be very difficult on the serviceman and everyone around him or her. In this case, SJD Peterson throws an extra curve into the adjustment. Gunny and Mac, who have been actively serving their country while secretly being lovers for over twenty years, have a bigger hurdle of adjustment to overcome. She presents the hurdle and shows us how gracefully and heroically it can be overcome. Strongly recommended.

This is the first book of SJD Peterson I've ever read although I have alot of their books in my TBR and I'm glad I started reading them with this book 'cos it was an excellent choice =D

Although as with religion, military books are books I tend to avoid because I'm not a fan of reading "good guys this, and bad guys that" etc etc, but this one focuses on the relationship between two, about to retire military guys and their future when DADT is about to be repealed.

Mac and Gunny are hot and the story is interesting and enjoyable without missing a beat. There were some editing errors here and there with wrong names being mentioned (like it should have said Mac but said Gunny when we were reading Gunny's POV) but it's easy to fix them while reading 'cos the writing is clear.

Give it a try you won't lose ^^

I love that they were in a committed relationship without admitting it to themselves. Such a lovely relationship.

Superb!
I loved how the two men in this book were *real* men, in that they were pretty much comfortable with themselves and who they are and how they live life. 'Marine' and 'gay' are not mutually exclusive! It was great how solid they were together - one shoreing up the other when they are vulnerable, and how they take on the world together. Great read!

This is, I think, the only m/m story I've read that explicitly revolves around the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in the US military - and it does it really, really well. There's quite a bit of sex, some D/s content and (for my taste) a few too many repetitions of what manly men the two protagonists are, but at the core it's a love story about two Marines who never thought they could actually be together, even after twenty years of a best-friends-with-benefits arrangement. For them, the end of DADT coincides with the end of their military careers, and the author tells beautifully how they deal with the fallout of both.

This is a cute little story about two soldiers going civil. Even in such a short form, the author managed to capture the personalities of both main characters. The storyline based on Gunny's doubts about the future of his relationship with his best friend Mac is pretty good. The sex scenes have a bdsm theme which I don't usually like. But there are so many clearly visible feelings in them that I didn't mind.

I saw that this short story was rewritten and published in a slightly longer form, I do not rule out that one day I will read it too. It's a nice short story.

It was already awesome when it was just a short story but it exceeded its awesomeness when the author extended Mac and Gunny's story! Loved it!
