Funny and insightful. I laughed out loud in parts. Yes, her privilege informs her voice but any one person can only write about what they experience.

I really enjoyed this book, but also didn’t.

The parts I related to, were amazing and had me laughing out loud or crying. Other parts, felt very far away from my journey - a good reminder of everyone’s journey being different.

3.5 - I had a great time listening to this book and finished the audiobook in less than a day. I really enjoyed the author’s particular sense of humor and her bare honesty when talking about sensitive or less discussed aspects of motherhood. There were a few viewpoints that I bristled against, as would many readers on a book of essays on motherhood, and some essays that I didn’t quite connect with. However, the writing was great and the delivery made this an overall enjoyable read.

I cannot remember just how I happened upon this book, maybe it was a recommendation from the Peloton Mom’s book club? Maybe a random scroll through Scribd? Either way, after briefly reading who the author was, I figured I would give it a shot. I need something pretty lighthearted and fun. This comedy writer book should give me that, right? Oh, I was so wrong in the best way possible. I didn’t find the comedy I expected, but I did find snippets sewn together (pretty masterfully, I might add) of relatable feelings, moments, and experiences. Even though I couldn’t relate to the nanny or night nurse parts, I did relate to the common emotions and experiences that I think possibly all mothers go through at some point. I mean, who hasn’t fully submitted to the fact that “yep, this is happening, I might as well just sit down…”. Ok, maybe not everyone has just given into the fact that they’re just going to be gross after visiting a public bathroom with a potty-training toddler, but I, for one, have been there.
How much do we want to know that our journey through motherhood and life isn’t unique? There is this experience and all the emotions that go with it that is so incredibly nuanced. I appreciate the candor and lack of sugarcoating. I am honestly surprised at how much I liked this book, especially considering the fact that I thought this was going to be lighthearted comedy.

I’m not a mom, but love my mom friends who have shown me glimpses of their own hero’s journey through motherhood, including the good, the bad, and the Starbucks bathroom potty training. Long live Buster the butterfly. A funny collection to read to know you’re not alone in raising the next generation.

I love Jessi Klein, she is hilarious. I was laughing out loud. I found her reflections on midlife and motherhood to be really poignant and authentic, even though I am neither in middle age nor a mother.
