I have no idea what I just read. Is this Pacific Rim fanfic? This book lacks solid world building, interesting characters, and good dialogue. There was so much promise here but falls short. This book is shocking underwhelming and overly simplistic.
Every person, man or woman, should read this book. There is a tag-line review on the cover “A primal scream of a book” that I think actually sums it up really well. A commentary on gender roles, sexuality, and relationship dynamics easily woven into an incredibly entertaining sci-if/fantasy story about giant mechs. Probably my favorite read of the year and definitely near the top of my favorite books ever list.

I think a younger me (middle and high school maybe early in college) would have really devoured this, but I found the writing to be rather juvenile -- especially rhetorical dialogue, which is a huge turn off for me especially in a romance -- and as an extremely avid sci fi reader the world building didn't grab me initially as much as I would like for it to.

Enjoyable. Writing isn't great, but if you think of it as an action/romance movie it's ok. I like the romance aspect, throuple is cute. I still have no idea what the winwin(sp?) look like lol.
I have not read a book that I love to this extent in a very very very very long time.
It's angry and does not give a d@mn.
If you aren't for feminism, if you're LGBTQ-phobic, or otherwise an equivalent loser, you will not like this book.
Go back to your cherry-picked bible verses and having your thoughts dictated by paedophilic men in power.
This book perfectly encapsulates my every emotion regarding patriarchy, misogyny, and homophobia within our current society.
Just like Xiran Jay Zhao, I'm tired of it, and just like Zetian, I would love to see heads roll for it - even those people that are called my "family".
I admit that I'm glad the editors had Xiran hold back the more extreme descriptions of rape, as it is a trigger of mine, but even if it was there I would still love this book with my entire soul.
I cannot wait for the second book to release. Preordered.

I find myself unable to really describe how I felt about this book. I loved the concept. Sometimes the writing was pretty weak. One thing I did really enjoy was that the protagonist was just allowed to be an angry pissed off woman, without any of the usual gradual softening of “but violence is not always the answer” that you usually get from that archetype. She doesn’t pull her punches, she doesn’t get sucked into the “but am I as bad as they are?!” moral pontificating. But she was just so wholly alienated from other women, too, and that just made me kind of sad because it felt like it leaned into the “not like other girls” trope. I would have loved to see her form bonds with other angry women. It is briefly alluded to in the torture scene, where she tells him that there are LOTS of other girls like her, who are just as capable and angry , but I would have liked to have seen more of that in the form of other named characters.
