I was more into this graphic novel than the other Heartstoppers because it's my first time reading one after watching the show, which isn't covered by the show. I'm looking forward to seeing this covered by the show. This is a summertime volume; the gang goes to Paris for a school trip, then our leads are separated as they go on separate family vacations. The novel does an excellent job of humorously but also tenderly showing the trials and tribulations of attempting to have fun while actually just wanting to text your partner back home.

Nick and Charlie's relationship is rock solid at this point, so their will-they won't-they is no longer the focus, leaving room some more serious topics around mental health. Charlie struggles with disordered eating, while Nick struggles with how to help him. I think this book does a good job of separating the concepts of caring for someone who is having mental health problems, and being able to fix it. It never subscribes to or glamorizes that idea that a relationship can fix Charlie, but it also shows how Nick's support is valuable to him.

Stray observations: Both Nick and Charlie turn out to speak a second language fluently. It feels like a bit of a retcon somehow.

This volume hit me right in the feels!

There were a lot of serious topics in this one, some that were hinted at or portrayed in volumes 1 & 2 and I'm still reeling from everything that Oseman got to. Nick and Charlie are so precious and I want nothing more than to protect them. They are so open to communicating with each other, and listening too. I love that there were group moments on their Paris trip, that highlighted how close the group is because it highlights the support system that they all need.

Oseman does another fantastic job in her illustrations and writing as she opens up the conversation not just about sexuality and coming to terms, but mental illness as well. This volume was a bit special because a lot of it is centered around Charlie, who reminds me of someone who I loved dearly and still do — there are similar mannerisms between them that I can't help but acknowledge how much they kept to themselves. So this one really got me!

trigger warnings: homophobia, bullying, biphobia, eating disorder, depression and anxiety, OCD triggers, sexual assault

I really don't need to say much. It's too cute for its own good at this point. Hit up webtoons if your stores are out of copies.

This is the point in the series where we start to learn more about charlies ed and things start to get more serious. Its not a complete change of pace of events and that makes it all the more realistic. We still continue to get cute and funny moments, but its not all sunshine and butterflies from this point on. Alice Oseman gives us the perfect balance of everything- from sarcasm to angst, from dorky jokes to serious discussions about mental health- that its hard to believe the characters are in fact not real and my friends.
