Nick and Charlie are officially together, and Nick has found the courage to come out to his mom.

Now that exams are over, the couple embarks on a class trip to Paris with some of their classmates. They're looking forward to time together, but not being out to their friends becomes even trickier on the trip. As they continue to grapple with how to tell their friends, their bond deepens.

Heartstopper: Volume Three contains lots of cute moments between Charlie and Nick, yet it also tackles the challenges of newfound love, and some serious mental health topics (eating disorder, self-harm). Alice Oseman approaches each of these topics in a sensible and tender way. I also appreciated the nudge at consent.

As the focus continues to be mainly on Nick and Charlie's relationship, the author has also developed a diverse cast of supporting characters, and gives us little snippets into their lives along the way. These side characters play a subtle and important role throughout the series.

What really stood out for me in this installment is the support system in place. Nick and Charlie are supported in a variety of way by many of the characters, but most noticeable is their support for one another. When Nick notices Charlie's aversion to food, he remains supportive and approaches the issue in a helpful rather that confrontational manner. He really shows he wants to understand what Charlie is going for, and I absolutely loved this portrayal.

I cannot recommend this graphic novel series enough! Volume Three continues the adorable romance story, but it's also delves into the topics of mental health and what it means to love, support, heal and recover. This is something very few books for young adults do with such tenderness. With each installment, I come to adore the series more and more.

"There's this idea that if you're not straight, you HAVE to tell all your family and friends immediately, like you owe it to them. But you don't. You don't have to do anything until you're ready."

"Even if things are harder when people know about us, we'll be okay, because we've got each other."

I love reading Heartstopper but out of all of the books, this one is far more emotional and could be triggering for some people because it brings up mental health and mental illness. Please check the content warnings!!
