Tsh Oxenreider is someone whose voice I listen to weekly on her podcast The Good List (and previous podcasts too). I also read the book she wrote about her family’s year long adventure traveling around the world. I like her philosophy, her conviction, and her style. She often talks about her faith in a way that is honoring and accessible. So I was excited to use Shadow and Light to celebrate Advent in 2020 and my expectations were exceeded.

Shadow and Light is a beautiful guide for Advent. The daily readings were relevant and beautiful. The additional resources added much to the experience. I absolutely loved the music playlist and phenomenal art chosen for each day. I didn’t use the personal reflection section at the back of the book this year (but I loved the option).

Tsh clarified the liturgical seasons for me. She also by example and invitation changed how I spent my days leading up to Christmas. My hands may have been busy but my heart posture was more still and joyful than in prior years. Plus we have plans to celebrate the Christmastide season differently this year. This is a wonderful Advent book, one I recommend highly.

I followed this Advent devotional throughout the season, and I really enjoyed it. In addition to scripture and reflection, Tsh Oxenreider includes a song to listen to and artwork to reflect on. Although the author is not Catholic, I felt as if this devotional worked well with my daily Advent prayers.

The only critique I have is that I wish the book included the images- it kind of took me out of my prayer time to go and look it up. Otherwise, I can’t wait to use it again in the future.

I didn’t read every word of this because Advent + pastor life is...a lot. But I enjoyed the format with the simple reading and reflection question for each day, plus engagement with art and songs. A non-stressful devotional guide in a season that lends itself to overcommitment.

This beautiful book is the perfect resource to help prepare for the Christmas season.

I love Advent - the waiting, the anticipation, the peacefulness of the season. Tsh Oxenreider provides a wonderful resource to help you focus on all of those things, and more.

Tsh gives scripture readings, a thoughtful question I will be journaling about, a song to listen to, and a piece of art to reflect upon for each day of Advent. She has incorporated all the senses, (including smell if you have an Advent wreath to light!) and I am so excited to dive into Shadow & Light to guide me through Advent.

Loved this slow, easy advent devotional. I’d read and sip my coffee by the light of the Christmas tree before starting my day. I’m really missing it this morning, the day after Christmas.

A thoughtful selection of Scripture, music, art, and short devotions for each day of Advent. The inclusion of music and art set this apart from other readings and add another layer of contemplation that I really enjoyed.

I always pick an Advent read and this one is fabulous. The writing is simple and beautiful. She shares a song to listen to and a painting to look at. I have been surprised how much more enriching that makes the reading.

Really lovely guide through Advent. We've been using this as a family - short reading, scripture, song, artwork (to look up), and reflection question.
