Mr. Romance

Louisa Masters

3.87 AVERAGE

After my previous debacles with this series, I decided to proceed with giving this book a read. Mr. Romance by Louisa Master is the third installment in the Franklin U series and centers around Charlie and Liam. Liam is known around the Franklin University campus as “Mr. Romance” because of his side hustle, helping folks plan the perfect date. When Charlie is presented to him, desperately in need of help, it isn’t to plan the perfect date: it’s to show Charlie how to be less romantic with casual friends following an episode where three people believed themselves to be dating him when in fact none of them were dating him.

This premise is absolutely silly, almost like a reverse John Tucker Must Die, and I found it to be fun! This story really makes for a nice, light read with some occasional spice and plenty of laughter. I love a good himbo in romance, and Charlie is absolute himbo gold. His good nature and his cluelessness make him a memorable character and the perfect pairing (imo) for a character like Liam. I also liked Liam, but he felt a bit more one-dimensional for me. He was more reserved and he never judged Charlie, which were certainly positive attributes, but aside from enjoying gymnastics I didn’t necessarily feel like I got to know much about the character as the story progressed.

This felt like a definite improvement over the first two books in the series, which I really struggled with for a variety of reasons. While I thought the story was much less problematic than the other two, it also felt much less believable (in terms of Charlie’s inability to understand his “relationships” over the years.) The relationship development between the MCs felt natural sexually, but I wish there had been more space for an emotional connection between the men. Despite these mild issues, I had a good time reading this book and found myself laughing at the story numerous times.

Fun.
Lighthearted stuff.

Rating between 3 and 4, because the minor quibbles did annoy enough to not be it a solid four.

Liam is lovely - a romantic at heart, so much that he helps others find love as a side hussle while at college. He's also fashion-challenged (well, he's a physics major), has an intriguing face (Charlie loves it) and is undersized. His great gymnast's physique is hidden under his unflattering clothes.

Charlie is rich, charming, clueless and kind. And very handsome. He likes to treat his friends well, which is a sure way to give missleading indicators that he's dating his "friends". When three of his "dates" have a show down in a café over him, he realizes his problem for the first time. And follows the recommendation of a real, platonic friend to enlist Mr Romance to teach him how to not give the wrong impression. For Liam it's a very new approach, but Charlie is insistent AND really needs help.
His fear of accidentally "dating" anyone else makes him stick to Liam's side almost constantly which of course leads to them becoming friends, besties, and eventually developing feelings. Deep ones. But Liam struggles with behaving unprofessional towards a client and friend. And Charlie doesn't want to loose his new very close friend. Of course the eventually sort out their problem and Charlie does it in the romantic way that lets Liam melt. Charlie didn't have to get pointers by Liam how to woe the object of his love, as Charlie learnt from the best (Liam).
Funny, charming fluff.
So why only three stars?

Fluff as it was it could have been 4 stars (5 I only give if the book blows me off my feet):
What bugged me was that some characters obviously have their own story, the hints are strong but I find it annoying when I get baited to hunt for some side characters' back story. Here, two minor characters (Ian and Matt) and their brothers were “raised in a cult”. Hints are dropped and dropped. So where do I find more info? Turns out they seem to be minor characters in another series. A paranormal one. Me: not happy.

4 ⭐️ MM college romance!

This books tend to be kind of hit or miss for me, because my uni years are kind of behind me and listening to barely out of their teens people meddle through feelings is not really the vibe I'm looking out of my books, but this one was cute.

Charlie was the oblivious kind. Seriously golden retriever who hit his head as a baby kind of lost when it came to romance. And so comes Mr Romance to the rescue -aka Liam- to try and save him from a hell of his own making. Now, getting closer to each other seemed like a good idea until feelings start coming out...

I listen to this audiobook and it was so entertaining! Perfect for those days you can't focus on a physical book but need to occupy your mind with something fun and fluffy.
