This book is way better than the first in my opinion. No idea why it's rated lower, it's way less predictable and I found the world building super interesting

Not as good as the first book, which was impossible to put down.
The plot became less interesting the further in, and the climax near the end felt really anti-climactic and rushed.
I love this author's other books and the series overall, but this one felt less developed than the others and left me feeling much less satisfied than her "War of Lost Hearts" series -which I absolutely adored and look forward to rereading

This one gets a star less than the first book, simply because I enjoyed it less.
I think it was actually a better book (maybe) but my heart wasn't really in it, and it took me over 4 months to get past 40% (after which I finished it in two days). There was no carefree joy like in book one: Vampire Hunger Games. Book two was too filled with big pointless battles where everyone got constantly mortally wounded and then magically recovered again - it made each battle seem pointless. The stakes were constantly Too High, so I lost interest.
I will say though - for a romantasy, the author really did not skimp on character and relationship development. I thought she did really well, and if I'd read the whole thing straight after the first one as I'd intended I think I would have rated this book much (if you count 1 star as "much", lol) higher. Oraya (as an aside, the names in this book are god awful. ORAYA??? Her love interest is called RAIHN. There is quite literally no name less sexy.)(ALSO I won't spoil it, but the "big bad" in this book, HIS NAME???????????? R u kidding me.) and her relationship with her father was actually interesting and nuanced. She was allowed to be multifacited, to have have complex reasonings for her actions and emotions.
I didn't like the addition of Raihn POV chapters.
I never really like that in romance books. Takes you out of the flow to be jumping between perspectives like that.
Overall - fun series! Though irritating, because I thought this was a duology, and turns out this is only parts 1 and 2 out of 6. Plus extra standalone stories in the same world. JOKES ON ME BABY. There were many, MANY loose ends at the end of the book.
Maybe once the next two books about Mishe are out I may dabble again, though I also probably won't.

fmc is annoying. also first half was so slow and then the second half and ending was lowkey so anticlimactic
hm. how did we get from the first book to here? the answer: inserting a male side character/love interest as THE main protagonist replacing the original FEMALE main protagonist. u cant even escape misogyny in a fictional fantasy book omg
i’m literally sick. i didn’t even notice until the second half of the book but raihn literally gets political intrigue, friendship, just doing shit without the shadow of his love interest. what does oraya get? LITERALLY EVERYTHING IS ABOUT RAIHN EXCEPT FOR SOME CHAPTERS ABOUT VINCENT AND SOMEHOW THE CORE CONCEPT OF LOVE STILL WARPS BACK TO RAIHN.
oraya has no friends. miche does not count.
i knew this was an issue when we went on that fake ass death chapter oraya had and visited her aunt for Plot™️ and then the human army commander (or something) is clearly addressing oraya, YET STILL SAYS KING BEFORE QUEEN. you might think i’m overreacting but when you realize everything about oraya this book has been centered around raihn it’s actually the tipping point.
no lie the second half of the book just consisted on convenient plot devices. the only good part was vincent’s memories. HOWEVER, the book was still interesting enough for me to read and was a pretty smooth reading experience even though i was def hate reading at the end.
