Between wrapping up the previous book and a fair amount of lecturing, there wasn't a lot of room left for the plot in this one. It was still good fun once it got moving, and I'll give it 3 stars instead of two for the bonus novella, where one of the POV characters is an Aeslin mouse.

TW/CW: Death, violence, fantasy violence, language

REVIEW: Backpacking Through Bedlam is the 12th book of McGuire’s InCryptid series. It is told from the point of view of Alice Price, who has returned home at last to a world that she has not been a part of for some time.

I enjoyed this book very much, as I always enjoy McGuire’s work. I love the originality of it, the world building, the characters, the stories that suck the reader in and keep them entirely interested.

While this book felt to me to be divided into two distinctly different parts, that wasn’t a bad thing. I look forward to seeing where Alice goes and how she works her way back into her family.

This book also included a novella which I adored – it kept with the themes of the main story, but also had the first-hand perspective of the Aeslin mice which is one of the best things I’ve read.

I definitely recommend this book to fans of McGuire and Urban Fantasy.

It's great to get a whole book dealing with the fallout of other books, and to see so many favourite characters again. And Alice's slowly changing relationship with Sally was great to read about too. And the little novella at the end was just perfect! I always love to see more Aeslin mice.

I enjoyed the plot of this addition to the Cryptid series. I enjoyed getting to know more about Thomas. The battle with the Covenant was a high point and getting caught up on New York crowd was great. I liked that we got to hear about some family not present. Some of the novel seemed unnecessary, and I wish we could have had more of a family reunion for everybody. I do not know if that is building, but I am so ready for that.

Not my favourite, this one got a little repetitive for me, but it has its share of charms. Not least of which, it made me feel less icky about a previous book's ending that felt a little too happy for how much horror I associate with the events of its conclusion. So, seeing that it was not, in fact, a horror story intended to be a HEA is genuinely reassuring, and if I'd known it would have that, I'd probably have read this sooner after release. Still, very excited to find out what's next, especially with that POV change coming up.
