Another fun installment in a favorite series!

This is the twelfth book in the series, and it falls into the pitfalls that books of this pedigree often do.

The first third is spent as an epilogue to the previous book.
The next third is spent having characters bump around and reunite with other beloved characters that they haven't seen for a little while.
Then the book seems to jostle itself awake, and realize that it's supposed to have a plot or something. It produces Something.
And hints at a big showdown that might be in the next book. End. Curtain.
Boring.

I haven't read any of the previous books of the series, and even I was bored of rehashing the same conversations over and over by the end.
Husband is worried about safety of wife. Family is big and blended. Danger danger, trauma something. Trust is important because family is important and also past betrayals still sting. Husband is worried about wife. Wife is obsessively worried about husband, and hurt that he is worried and doesn't trust her. Family is big and complicated. Organized religion is bad, unless you are a comic relief mouse worshipping the protagonist. They aren't in the loop with modern life (laugh). Danger danger. Spouses are worried and clingy.
Boring.

Thanks to Netgalley and DAW for a copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own.

Alice and Thomas have finally been reunited, and after a few dimensional jumps find themselves back at home and in the middle of a war. We're thrown straight back into Price/Healy chaos and reunited with Verity after a very long absence.

Not sure what it is but Alice and Thomas don't quite grab my attention, I found myself yearning more for the younger generation and for Sally to be reunited with the crossroads crew.

This is one instalment in the InCryptid series that should be read after others have been read. This is a big tie up of all that has been going on before and could be seen as a resting point in the writing of this series. Or, it could be the in tv speak, the end of a season, readying for the next season, where Alice and Thomas are back and everyone adjusts to the implications of both of their presence.

4.5 stars. I love it when they bring characters between books together! I'm just not a "favorite characters having a baby" person. Kinda cuts the fun for me since I'm not a kid person, but that's just me. Novella at the end was great!!

InCryptid is what I would consider Brain Candy. It's a lot of fun, and I clearly love the series (or I wouldn't have read 12 novels and over 30 short stories for it), but it's definitely not a series that you should think too hard about.

So I probably shouldn't complain about the fact that, once again, all the narrators have the same voice, and despite the fact that Alice has been hopping dimensions for over 50 years she somehow has a very modern inner voice complete with modern-sounding slang and everything else. It doesn't bother me.  It doesn't. (It sort of does).

Last book I was hoping that this book would contain some more Price-family-togetherness, especially with the events of the last book. Just some family downtime where they can digest things that have happened and when we can see them all react to things.

Unfortunately, I was left wanting once again.

Regardless of all that though, I had a lot of fun with this book, and very much enjoyed myself.  I loved that everything wasn't sunshine and rainbows after the last book and that there wwre issues that needed ironing out between the leads of rhe book. I cannot wait to read Mary's book next!

After the last book, I complained about the lack of side characters for Alice to work off of and tension of an overarching plot. The first problem was absolutely addressed as Alice and Thomas return to Earth, reconnecting with several characters, including the family. As for the tension, it was....sort of there?

Pacing issues continue as roughly a quarter of the book is dedicated to tying up loose ends from the last book. The next quarter is Alice, Thomas, and Sally trying to reacquaint themselves with Earth, which I honestly didn't mind, had it not taken up that many pages. They only head toward the main plot halfway through, at which point it just turns into Book 2 again, which I also had plot/pacing issues with. Once again, most of the plot-related action was shoved into the final 40-50 pages, complete with nearly the same scenario. We are told that the war on the Covenant has continued to rise, but on-page it seemingly hasn't progressed much since they sent the other team after Dominic. I thought we were building up to an epic battle, but it simply...didn't happen. Seanan, I need you to fulfill your plot promises!!

The Book 2 comparison is especially apt as Alice settles into her character as Verity 2. I like Verity's POVs, and Alice's does get more grounded as she returns to those familiar to her. But Alice should not be Verity 2, regardless of how many times they are described as looking similar.

did get one other thing I complained about- Alice and Thomas finding conflict after being apart for 50 years. Sure, it doesn't last very long, but Alice's insecurities were complex and realistic.

Also, the mice!!! I love them so much, especially Acadia and Camden in the novella.
