Great book, too bad Neil gaiman is a disgusting predator.

Interesting fairytale. Definitely had the Neil Gaimen flair. I think this is my 3rd for 4th Gaimen book. Not even close as good as The Ocean at the End of the Lane but did make me want to continue reading his works.

For informational purposes this title includes descriptive sexual content and a child born out of wedlock, magic and deadly violence along with torture.

I saw the movie first and absolutely loved it. Then while looking though Gaiman's books I was happily surprised that there was a book version one of my favorite movies. I was not let down. This is a fantastic book and to my surprise way better than the movie. I am super happy I read this and I recommend this book to everyone!

I've heard some criticism about this book...mostly that it can be too vague in parts, or not elaborate on characters or points not integral to the main story. To me, I think that is part of the charm of this adult fairy tale. There are parts that are fanciful, and segments that are violent and grim. The epilogue left much to interpretation, and finishes with just the right touch wistful sadness. I thought the novel was absolutely delightful and I find myself already craving another Gaiman book.

My rating is 3.5 stars. I have only read one other book by Neil Gaiman, "The Graveyard Book", and loved it so I had high hopes for "Stardust". It didn't grab my attention right away like "The Graveyard Book" had done. I was confused at first because the first chapter is about Tristran's dad, Dunstan, which I was not expecting. It wasn't until about halfway into the book that Tristran meets Yvaine, the star, and that is when the book really picked up for me. There were too many characters and plot lines to keep track of. I would be following the story of Tristran and Yvaine, then it would go into the stories of 3 other characters, finally go back to Tristran and Yvaine and I forgot what had happened to them before. There were a couple characters that were just plot devices to make sure Tristran and Yvaine stayed alive and reached their final destination. I wish those characters had a bigger part in the book, and we could of learned their backstories instead of a few characters that had major parts in the book. I still enjoyed the writing style, and there were a couple moments that made me laugh out loud. I'll still read Neil Gaiman's books but "Stardust" is not my favorite of his books.

This is one of my all time favorite movies, so I had high expectations for the book. Seems like the magic of the movie lies in the screenwriter though, because the source material was just a let down. Especially after reading the Princess Bride earlier this year and loving how closely the book matched the movie.

The characters and entire storyline just seemed under developed. I kept waiting to feel something magical... And all I felt was disappointed.
