This book was so fantastic! I loved the mystery, and the different take on Sherlock Holmes, and yeah, I can't wait for the next book!

There are many modern spins on Sherlock Holmes and many with the same spin, such as Holmes as a woman. From the title this is obviously one of those spins and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the whole approach to replacing the famous detective and how they got around a women's place in society at the time. The characters were likeable and fun as were the mysteries. I will definitely continue with the series.

The actual story doesn't begin until about halfway in. Until that point it is nothing but exposition and glimpses of a really boring crime procedural. The Sherlock Holmes and Watson aspect barely makes an appearance before that point. Watson doesn't arrive until the last few pages. Even the mystery, which is sooooo painstakingly developed through the boring crime procedural, feels hastily wrapped up on a side note in the end. There were a few good moments, but overall the book was a bore. Also, this book is in my Top Ten of Romantic Subplots that Nobody Needed.

I read this book because I found that I loved a lot of the quotes, which makes sense because I felt the writing was beautiful. I also enjoyed the reversal of gender roles and the characters of Sherlock Holmes, but the plot seemed slow at times. Still, I enjoyed the characters and concept, so I think I'll read others in the series at some point in the future.

It's an interesting start to a new historical mystery series. The characters are good but the flow of the story could have been better. I kept having to flip back and forth because I felt like I missed something or missed an introduction to a character.
