I am obsessed with this series and I feel like for almost every series, the first one hold a special spot in your heart and is always the best. you are meeting all these characters for the first time and figuring out where it'll go from here and it feels inherantly nostalgic to look back on book 1 after binge reading the entire series in 4 days (if you're me). I love reed and Ellery's dynamic and the way he cares about her just so immediately after radio silence for 14 years.
from the moment Brady was introduced as a character I was suspicious of him because I liked him so much he was a little artist who worked with animals and he was ellery's only friend of course you want to like him but when you're reading a book that you know is a murder mystery of course that's the person you're immediately suspicious of I just kept saying please don't be him and then well you know.
I think if I were to rank the series as a whole it would go 1,5,4,3,2 but not a single book in this series is less than 3.9 stars in my heart.

Very solid, good mystery! Looking forward to a sequel.

Ellery Hathaway is a 28 year old cop in a small Massachusetts town with secrets. 14 years ago she was the lone survivor of a serial killer. Ellery hasn't told anyone of her past and changed her name to protect her past.

Three people disappear in her town and her chief isn't interested in her theories. But she's seen this before, obviously, yet she doesn't want to tell her cop coworkers why she has a bad feeling about these missing people. She finally decides to call the FBI agent who rescued her 14 years ago to ask him for help. Agent Reed Markham, struggling in his own life, immediately flies to Ellery to help.

The book is written very well and is compelling and hard to put down. I didn't particularly love Ellery, she was a bit naive and wishy-washy at times, but I did like the story a lot and didn't guess the ending!

The story felt very familiar to me. Victim survives serial killer, changes name, enters law enforcement and is convinced her tormentor has returned by some acts of violence no one else sees a connection among. These characters felt very one dimensional. Former victim, seems together but really isn’t, washed up law enforcement agent who saved victim comes to help her, small town cops bungle around while trying to hide their own secrets, and killer who connects self to serial killers crimes and wants to outshine his deeds.
It wasn’t terrible but I skipped big chunks and missed nothing. I figured out the killer fairly quickly too.
