This was the first of Atwood’s books that I’ve read and I’m afraid it hasn’t inspired me to pick up many others. Perhaps I picked the wrong first one to read!
I liked the concept of this story, I haven’t read much dystopian, but I really enjoy the themes of it. I just found that it was so weirdly ‘fleshed out’. There were some bits that felt they needed explaining more and some bits where I found myself literally skimming pages quickly as it was just a bit boring.
Some characters were developed really well, and then it felt like others were kind of thrown in there. This would be fine although I felt like I then needed to recall them later on in the story.
If you are looking for a brilliant dystopian thriller ‘you could be so pretty’ by Holly Bourne is a must read.

I consumed this book in the audio format, so perhaps that skewed my vision of the characters. I hated Charmaine's character and I hated being inside her head so often. I often wondered if there was a word count requirement for this book which would explain the seemingly endless rambling battles Charmaine had inside her head.
On the face of it, the plot is what intrigued me, but the book ended up in a very weird place. Just stupid and tacky overall.

10/10 : I’m not sure I’ll meet an Atwood novel that I won’t like! This storyline was disturbing, but captivating & certainly not implausible. Focusing on a couple who decide to sign up to a controversial, radical solution to extreme poverty & societal collapse. Giving up their ‘freedom’, they enter into a world where 50% of citizens time is spent ‘freely’, with the other 50% spent in prison. When someone high up on the inside goes rogue, a complicated escape plan is hatched, unravelling twisted truths along the way. Fascinating read, that I keep thinking about.
