The premise was incredibly unrealistic, and some of the characters and their actions made me really uncomfortable...mainly the whole brain-ablation sex slave thing, but also the over the top sexism. It's supposed to be the future (I assume), but people are even more sexist than they are today. It was gross.
But, I have always wondered why homeless people don't just commit crime--if they're caught, they go to jail and get free room and board; if they're not caught, then they get to steal stuff and are able to afford their own room and board. Win win. So the fact that Atwood played on this idea was kind of fun. Silly, and unrealistic, and a bit dumb, but fun.

Forse se non avessi letto prima il racconto dell’ancella avrei amato di più questo romanzo. Per me ormai quello è lo standard della Atwood,
che è altissimo quindi difficile da mantenere.
Distopico come mi aspettavo, prima parte decisamente ansiogena e con qualche accenno di morbosità ma maieccessiva. Finale un po’ troppo poco ad effetto, mi aspettavo qualcosa di più wow. La scrittura della Atwood in compenso è sempre potente e diretta perfetta per quello che sta raccontando. Sicuramente è una di quelle storie che non si dimenticano velocemente.

Perhaps it was the translation, but I was underwhelmed by this. The characters overall come off a little one-trackminded (sex, sex, sex) and the ending felt abrupt, even random. Whatever this says about love and free will, even satirical, didn't hit home for me. Might just not be my type of book.
