This was hands down her worst book ever.
I kept reading with the hope that these vapid characters would server a larger, social commentary, purpose.
But that never occurred.
It felt like an incel combined Brave New World and Stepford Wives while listening to Andrew Tate on repeat.

Ever since I picked up The Handmaid's Tale and read a couple of her short stories for my Bachelors Degree, I have wanted to pick up more by the Canadian legend, Margaret Atwood. I keep and eye out at charity book sales and discount book stores, and I found this gem.

Now, I did read other reviews before I picked this up and knew going in it wasn't considered one of her best dystopian novels, but I think it was pretty darn good. I was glued to it until the last 20% where I feel like it kind of fell short. Regardless, I liked it. This "perfect" little city was clearly going to be a world of greed, and the way it kept spiralling into insanity... So interesting. Clearly, it's satire, so take this book with a grain of salt.

But some of the sarcasm and comedy in it is peak. It's great.

So, regardless of if this is her best book or not, it was enjoyable and I now need to keep working my way through her back catalogue.

Four out of five stars.

I did not enjoy this at all. The perspective gets lost in the plot, which is very weird and pointless. It doesn't feel like Atwood understands people, or if she does, she's not using this novel to demonstrate that. She uses characters and the novel as a vehicle for "social commentary," but the commentary is muddled because she doesn't actually develop her characters like real people.

Also probably 80% of the first half of the book was characters just speculating on what might happen, asking themselves rhetorical questions in the third person omniscient (which seems lazy and sloppy) AND THEN NONE OF IT EVER HAPPENS. It's so stupid and such a waste of my time and the book had no chance at earning more than 2 stars in my book after doing that repeatedly. Ugh. The only reason I'm glad I powered through is that now I never have to feel like I should give Atwood a try again.

I wanted to like it, everything was solid from the start. Great premise, slightly shallow/two dimensional characters that you hoped would change, interesting world. But the second half of the book felt like it took place in a different world, only not in a good way.
