What a dark social commentary that is truly well pieces and crafted. The story itself is intriguing but the message around "the American Dream" and domesticity is genius. Must be read with handmaid's tale as an alternative if not precursor idea of the future.
Definitely a dystopian novel to take note of and question. Beyond it's direct social analysis of the U.S. It also questions our prisons in a sublet but important way. With organ donations and attitudes to the incarcerated.
Anyone that cares about social justice and questions the current world needs to give this a shot!

Atwood, a phenomenal storyteller as always, paints an all too realistic image of society gone wrong. Beautifully written, and equally as intriguing as her Oryx and Crake series.
4 stars because it is a bit predictable, and the setting of the story doesn't match Atwood's distinctly Canadian verbiage at times.

more like 3.5 stars. no one does near-future Twilight Zone like MA, and no one has the knack for somehow making it whimsical at the same time.
Not her absolute best novel, but I like this dark and twisted story enough that this is my second reading! Think the ending could be better but the story will keep you turning the pages and wondering just how fucked up the world can get.
Because this is Atwood and because I found other writing to be compelling, I really, really wanted to find this book interesting. I did not. I struggled through 3/4 of the book, hoping it was going to really pick up in the next chapter but sadly, no. It was confusing right from the beginning; the premise does not make sense to me. I hope I didn't miss a spectacular, twisty ending. Not recommended.
Great! Not especially original in terms of story but so well written, great characters and really funny.
Odd, strange , weird little story of capitalism and consumerism in the extreme. Funny, and at the same time a wicked whack at our ultra corporate culture of profit at any cost. Mixed reviews it seems. Pay no attention / a fun, kinky, kooky story that surprises. Solid 4 stars!
Good stuff. Margaret Atwood tiene mi confianza total.
Man, did I love the beginning of this book. Financial collapse dystopia, plus a pair of plucky newlyweds living out of their car? I'm in. And the set-up for Consilience is interesting, too -- if a bit forced.
But then it just spirals out so spectacularly: sexbots and a sea of Elvises and a woman who has a procedure done to her brain where she falls in love with a knit bear... I don't know, it just wasn't my cup of tea. Furthermore, I wasn't rooting for Stan or Charmaine; they were both as despicable as the mustache-twisting Villain at the head of it all.
If you're in the market for dystopian spec fic, skip this and pick up The Handmaid's Tale instead.
