Silver Elite

I really wanted to like this. The characters are good and much of the conversations are bright. It has a good mix of drama, comedy and sarcasm. It even stays on the right side of the SF/Romance line, mixing both but keeping the SF and action pre-eminent.

Sadly, as with most terrible novels these days, it's way too long for its content. Far worse, the main character is too stupid to live. It's not only the foolishness of the expert shot at the beginning of the book, the one that gets her caught, as she could have killed the wolf without it. The main one, about halfway through, is when she gets a healer to eliminate the burn mark covering the mark that proves she's magical. Absolutely idiotic.

Wren is in hiding because the current dictator is anti-magical after the previous dictator was a magical bigot. Centuries ago, a bio-weapon gave some people that power, and now it's genetic. She gets recruited into the dictator's elite program and, of course, meet the guy to hate then love. It looks like a post environmental apocalyptic North America from the map.

The world's ok but standard, the plot is standard, the length is poorly overwritten standard, but the main character is what drags this below average.

I liked this book overall. It kept me wanting to read to figure out what was happening and who was who. I guessed some of the mystery before it was revealed, and there are more questions to be answered, but I liked Wren and Cross. The dystopian world described is a little scary and too close to a reality I could see happening these days!

It didn’t draw me in the way this genre normally does. The world building was just ok. I never felt invested in the characters. It was too easy to know what was coming with the big reveal.

simply tore through this book - felt like i was reading divergent again for the first time. while the tropes are nothing new (and honestly, maybe overdone) it was exactly what i needed

Not sure how this book was compared to Hunger Games. However this book was similar to Divergent. Looking forward to the next book to see what happens.
